Currently in development and not yet considered a full game but still very impressive anyway, Veloren is a free and open source multiplayer voxel RPG. Inspired by the likes of Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft it's a very exciting project to be following. Written in the popular Rust programming language it fully supports Linux, macOS and Windows.

This latest release is the biggest yet, with overhauls to various parts of the game as well as introducing plenty of new features to keep players busy.

Highlights of the 0.8 release include:

  • New level of detail feature, letting you see all the world's terrain at any view distance.
  • Block-based voxel lighting.
  • Point and directional lights now cast realistic shadows, using shadow mapping.
  • Added leaf and chimney particles.
  • Some more combat sound effects.
  • New creatures and habitats including: beehives and bees, fireflies, several new animals and bosses.
  • Animals now have customized attacks and AI
  • Travellers that explore the world
  • Lots of new sound effects.
  • Lots of UI improvements.
  • Combat improvements with: improved sneaking, roll dodging, a buff system and more.
  • New forest types with Birch and Willow.
  • And the list goes on…

You can check out about 15 minutes of gameplay from the latest release below, which shows off lots of new bits:

If you missed it, we interviewed one of the developers involved in creating Veloren back in June 2020 which is a great read worth a few minutes. Another excellent example of open source in action, with Veloren shaping up to be one of the most promising modern FOSS games available.

You can download for free from the website. The full source code is up on GitLab.

Yeah, performance is pretty good. The main problem for now is the server side performance, mainly in relation to the physics tick rate. During the release party the server had to scale down to 10 ticks per second due to overload (beefy server and about 100 players). So while your client might be plenty fast, it will still look laggy due to the physics tick rate*.

*Of course you could have more client side interpolation, but then there is a lot of guess-work involved on the client side and you get the typical network lag effects visible in some other games.

First thing I did was run to the mountain figured out how to glide and jumped. The long glide and music is very peaceful =)

I am awful at it but this game is so cool!

Looks adorable, and the ability to glide, the way it's implemented, is inspired! Once the devs have fleshed it out a bit more (skills, better PvP/re-spawn system, etc.) I'd can see spending many and hour monkeying around in this.

Quoting: Sojiro84Checked out the game today as well. Saw a Reddit thread about it.

As far as new player experiences go, it's terrible.

I joined, got killed almost instantly. I respawn in the exact same spot and the same player kills me again.

I then decided to run away and the damn player is chasing me for about 20 minutes when I just gave up.

So, yeah, probably not going to be playing the game again anytime soon if this isn't fixed. I don't even got a chance to learn how the game works. Are there levels? If so, then the first few levels there should be immunity so that one can learn how to play the game.
You have a valid concern here, but might I suggest playing single-player to explore the game? That's the only way I've personally played so far. I would have jumped on the release party but I learned of it too late.

The timing of this release is funny for me because I just played the game with my kids yesterday before I knew there was a big update. I was pleasantly surprised to see a lot of things added to add interest to what was a more empty game. We used the Airshipper launcher which updated the game and then we played on a local server that was launched by browsing to the installation folder and running the server-cli program. If anyone is going to do the same thing, first go into the server-cli settings file and change the auth server to "None". I'll edit this post to add exact path since the documentation is not verbose on this matter.

EDIT: You first need to run ~/.local/share/airshipper/profiles/default/veloren-server-cli at least once.

Running it will generate the settings file here:
~/.local/share/airshipper/profiles/default/userdata/server/server_config

You need to change the auth server to None like this:

auth_server_address: None,

Restart the server, and then other players on your LAN can join your server without a password.
