The Co-op News Punch Podcast - Episode 26

By -

The first GOL Podcast episode of 2021 is here, come get it while it's hot and ranty as we cover a range of weird and wonderful topics in Linux, open source, gaming and more.

Apologies on the delay with this episode but we're back! As usual, it's a very casual and frank chat between two friends (myself) and GOL contributor / Linux livestreamer Samsai about many different Linux-related topics.

Here's a few of the main bits of what we talked about this episode:

Quoting: heidi.wengerand let me tell you mr. samsai: i as a woman would never accept any different or special treatment because of my gender. nevermind some colour of my body.
Surely you'd accept and even expect equal treatment though? Or will you meekly accept lower wages or worse treatment by the police (for example) than someone else because of your gender or skin colour or some other physical trait? Or do you perhaps find it more useful to insult the intelligence of people who think we should acknowledge the fact that some people have it worse than us, and understand that no true problem just disappears if you ignore it long enough?

right, and yet there is no evidence on this kind of systemic oppression based on physical trait or gender.

statistics show actualy that more caucasian people are shot by police an that may simply be because there are more caucasian in for example america. while a disproportionate number of black people are shot,, that MAY be because they encounter police more often.

theres no proof whether that is because one commit more crimes than other, or because of racial bias by police.

we simply do not know enough. it is cetainly not for people's own good as a whole to amass these kind of radical movements that would only divide us more and are not based on undeniable proof! my black friends say that they DO NOT want a "black history month" if there is no "yellow history month" and "white history month". i think this is exacly what mentioned morgan freeeman said too as i found that intreview. and that interviewer was jewish saying he dont want a "jewish history month" either lol.

There's no gender pay gap? Queer folk are not mistreated anywhere for being queer? Racism has no real effect on anyone's life?

Comfortable bubble you've got there. Must be nice.

And how do you undeniably prove an ethical or political issue? How did people prove that women should have the vote, or that slavery is a bad thing? There are obviously things you can measure here but there's no way to do it in a way that will not leave room for denial.

That said, even hard scientific data hasn't stopped climate change deniers or other equally harmful groups from standing in the way of progress.

The sad thing is that these sort of "radical" movements are historically often the driving force behind important steps in human rights issues. They don't divide us as much as they expose divisions that are already there. Gotta acknowledge a problem before you can fix it.

And I put those quotes around radical intentionally because that word is overused. Asking for equal treatment isn't radical. Protesting for civil rights isn't radical. Hell, in the US even people asking for things such as universal access to basic health care are painted as radical.

In a just society we'd all want to live in harmony, but that's obviously just a fantasy. Those in power (or with wealth) are generally not willing to give up on even an insignificant bit of it, and those without power have to struggle for equal opportunity. Denying that fact is being blind to much of human history.

What are you talking about? No one has denied racism of not existing. If, say, women, like me, would get less pay for the same job: why would anyone ever hire a man for it? C'mon.

No need to judge me on "living in a bubble" either... No need to get offensive like at all. These things can be discussed without slurs. Right? Right.

You tell me, because apparently they do. As of last year, women are paid on average 14% less for exactly the same job as men in the EU. That's just a fact. Exact numbers between member countries differ, but in none of them is it the other way around or completely equal.

I just seriously don't understand how you can avoid hearing about these problems or deny the results of a wealth of credible published studies on them unless your information comes from a narrow set of news media. The other option is that you choose to ignore or disregard it all because it contradicts your world view, but I'd rather give you the benefit of the doubt.

But you're right, my frustration got the best of me. There was no need for the snark. Sorry.

EDIT: This is very off topic and doesn't belong here. Sorry.
