Luck be a Landlord is a fresh game out in Early Access from TrampolineTales that claims it's a "roguelike deckbuilder about using a slot machine to earn rent money and defeat capitalism". I will admit, that kind of description suckered me right in, I had to give this one a go. Built with Godot Engine, it has great Linux support too and there's even a demo to try before you buy and try your luck.
The idea is that you've moved into a new place that came with a slot machine, you use this to acquire money to pay your rent. Over time you build up the symbols on it like you're creating a deck to increase your chances. There's plenty of luck involved of course since it uses slot machine mechanics but there's also plenty of strategy in how you build up the symbols and how they interact with each other.

There's tons of interactions going on. It's not just a case of one symbol boosting another. Certain symbols take many turns to do anything, some will amplify the amount gained like bees and flowers together but then you also have rain which can boost flowers again or make buds grow. You then also get special objects like a piggy bank which takes one gold each turn but when you destroy it you get two times the amount stores.
It's been something of a surprise hit too! Since entering Early Access in January 2021, it's already reached over 1,000 user reviews and a Very Positive rating. After playing around with the demo for a while I can see why and the demo only takes 20 or so minutes to finish (luck providing). It's a pure experience that doesn't tax the mind, while feeding into that one more go feeling of needing to play it. So, just like actual gambling without losing all your actual money? Sort of.
Faced with rent that's constantly increasing, can you spin your way to victory?
You can buy it on Steam.
