Even more glorious retro FPS goodness is coming! Wolfenstein - Blade of Agony, the incredible GZDoom story-driven free game will be getting a brand new release on April 30.

"Blade of Agony is a story-driven FPS. The project is inspired by WWII shooters from the 90's and early 2000's, like Wolfenstein 3D, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty, but with faster-paced gameplay in the spirit of Doom! The game can be played standalone using the GZDoom engine as a base."

The team has been working for quite some time now on the third chapter, which will be releasing on April 30 along with the first two chapters being remastered for this final update. Check out their new trailer:

Some of what it will feature:

  • A combination of low-poly models and hi-resolution sprite assets to create the perfect retro feeling
  • Devastating armaments from the battlefields of WWII
  • Interactive NPCs that support the twisted plot's progress and help you understand the game
  • Improved enemy AI for more dynamic and challenging fights
  • Beautiful special effects (weather, elements, explosions, etc.)
  • Modern post-processing shaders (motion & effect blur, noise, flares, etc.)
  • Much, much more!

Recently the czech gaming magazine Score did a preview, and gave it a 92% score. You can read it translated here.

While the developers only put out a Windows standalone, it's just a PAK for the GZDoom game engine. So running it on Linux is as easy as another other Doom-like mod you want to play so we expect no Linux-specific issues at release. You can also use the Snap / Flathub packages.

Great. I met DoomJuan of the team in another project of his and had some insight on his design approach and who would have guessed: Dude is really doing his research so some buildings should hold up to history in great detail

I need to restart this game on an easier mode.. game is pretty brutal if you get hit even once .. It's done amazingly well though.. Very impressive

I'm hoping to have the snap build ready for release day. It isn't so simple getting this running on Ubuntu, because the mod targets the latest version of gzdoom and the gzdoom dev is refactoring the build process in a way which is slightly incompatible with the libraries and cmake versions of the Ubuntu lts releases. It is one of the few occasions where I wish I was on Arch! Hopefully the snap will be helpful for fellow Ubuntu users, and anyone else who is happy with the snap ecosystem. I'd be grateful for any feedback after launch day.

Yep. There's a gzdoom snap as well. However, it makes sense to bundle the mod with a known-working version of gzdoom. For example, the previous release of chapters 1 and 2 is somewhat incompatible with the current gzdoom release. The aim is to reduce friction.

It looks great but man even the training is pretty brutal. At the least gimme the buttons I need to be pressing rather than just the description.

We don't have permission to release anything beyond 2.0 yet.

The flatpak illustrates my point as it was broken for a long time, having upgraded the version of gzdoom to one which didn't run with the version 2.0 mod.

I'm not sure if your two replies posting links to flatpaks is implicit criticism of the existence of the snap, but I can assure you that both myself and the flatpak maintainer are happy for both to exist for anyone who wants to use them. I have no qualms about pinching good ideas from the flatpak for the snap.

I hope, if you ever do try the snap, you let me know if it works for you and any suggestions for improvement. This game is hugely impressive, and I'd love to be doing it justice :)
