After the huge announcement recently from the Linux Foundation that Amazon had donated the Lumberyard game engine as open source, with the formation of the Open 3D Engine and the Open 3D Foundation we're seeing some good progress on getting the editor supported on Linux.

Developer Fabio Anderegg shared the news via Twitter, as they've been hacking away at the code to get it into a usable state on Linux. There's a pull request in progress on the official GitHub page which mentions a bunch that needs to be done but that didn't stop Anderegg showing it off:

Speaking on GitHub x mentioned "So I actually got a working Editor now! Because it's a very ugly hack, it sits on a separate branch for now: https://github.com/fabioanderegg/o3de/commits/vulkan1.2-hacks".

Nice to see the progress there, as it was thoroughly odd that the Linux Foundation didn't wait for it to be hooked up on Linux for the big announcement. It wasn't even mentioned clearly which I moaned about a bit on Twitter but it got the attention of Chris Aniszczyk (CTO, Linux Foundation) who got the FAQ updated to actually be clearer on platforms.

Aniszczyk also mentioned recently on Twitter how "the more I learn about the games industry, it's absolutely bonkers they have tied most of their engine development to completely proprietary platforms and operating systems missing out on positive sum open source innovation... that will change this decade".

Shocked that progress on this front came so quickly, but also pleased. I'm still sticking with Godot (eagerly looking forward to the 4.x line), but I'm not gonna complain even a little bit about more competition in the cross-platform open source game engine space. It can only be a good thing.

I like Aniszczyk's quote at the end. So true.
