Thrive is a free and open source evolution sim, a bit like the early stages of Spore and there's a new release out. With Thrive 0.5.5 their focus has been on improving everything that's already there with big bug fixes. So this means no big new features but it does make a better and more interesting game to play through.

You will see there are some fresh graphical upgrades for cells, long-awaited bug fixes for the cell collecting feature (binding agents) to make it smoother, rival species are going to be much more capable and adaptable to compete with you along with a reworked spawn system. That's really just scratching the surface and you can see their blog post for the in-depth info.

Nice! I thought Spore was an awesome idea from reading about it... but when it was released, it ended up being basically just a RTS with bland units you supposedly had a choice in evolving. So much potential wasted. Will have to try this out!

From what I recall Spore was intended to be more scientifically focused, this is the original concept gameplay:

Going to have to try Thrive out too, Spore fell quite short of its potential.
Yeah, I messed with the demo when it came out, loved it. Then got the full game and it rapidly just turned into an RTS where you had goofy looking characters fighting each other. Such a awesome idea, that they wussied out on and made a generic game.

Spore was so thoroughly disappointing, until recently I thought Peter Molyneux had a leading role in its development...

Yes, Peter. I'm still bitter about Godus.
