Were you hoping to play Destiny 2 on Steam Deck or a Linux desktop using Proton? Well, you're currently out of luck. Their updated Steam Guide has a newer section just for Steam Deck and it's not good news.

Like a lot of bigger games, they don't support Linux either natively or at all and right now it appears they don't have any plans to either. It reads:

Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play's Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time.

Players who attempt to bypass Destiny 2 incompatibility will be met with a game ban.

I've already seen a few places jump on that last line but it's pretty normal. Anyone who works around anti-cheat in online games, would face a ban. I mean, that's obvious really isn't it?

Note: Destiny 2 already has a full Linux port, since it runs on Stadia and it was properly ported for it.

For Destiny 2 to work with Proton if they decided not to bring over their Stadia Linux port to Steam, one thing Bungie would need to do is speak to BattlEye which it now uses, although that's only supposed to be a little email away to get hooked up.

Meanwhile, I don't want to hype it up too much just yet but Apex Legends now works on Linux with Proton and the Steam Deck. I even captured a little rough video for you. No confirmation yet to be clear so it's not official as far as I am concerned, so I'm hoping it's not another case of a game that will stop working in a day or two like has happened previously with multiple games. Given the Steam Deck is here though, and Apex had a dedicated Steam Deck branch we saw on SteamDB — I remain hopeful on that.

Quoting: CFWhitmanthe reason for not using that version is because they can't control Linux machines that other people run like Stadia servers can be controlled. They have the 'Linux is a cheating risk' mindset.

I've heard this argument before, but the same applies to the entire PC ecosystem, not just Linux.

A quick google finds me a Forbes article saying that anger over Destiny 2 cheating is reaching a tipping point.(Apr 2020)
And a player one article saying that cheaters have returned despite new anti-cheat measures (Oct 2021).

I assume the majority of these cheaters are on the Windows platform.

Kind of funny... Bungie used to be the game company that made Mac games. Then MS bought them and Marathon became Halo... the game that made the Xbox popular. And now they make a mediocre multiplayer only game series that still makes tons of money because it scratches the itch of a lot of people. (My opinion on Destiny is that the game has an excellent story line to it with some awesome lore, stitched together with a 'meh' game.)

I sort of feel from their response that they are bitter that Linux is being more successful as a game platform. While the M1 macs are 100% capable of gaming, there are only a tiny amount of games that will work on it, thanks to dropping 32bit support and lack of native ports.

On the one hand, fine, they can support or not support whatever they want, but one the other hand, the antagonistic tone of that statement is just horrid.

Saying "you will be faced with a ban" is not antagonistic in of itself because, as Liam wrote, this is literally how ANY anti-cheat supported game reacts, and has done since Wine came onto the scene, and isn't new behaviour. It'd be antagonistic if Bungie had said "We will never support linux you weebs, and you'll face a ban for even trying on your cruddy operating system". That would be antagonistic. What we got was boilerplate PR speak, and nothing more.

What we're currently seeing, and probably will continue to see for the foreseeable future, is just news sites making a bigger deal out of this than they should be because the Steam Deck is the new hot thing, and being outraged at Bungie's response about not playing a game like that on the Deck is gonna get some clicks. Glad Liam didn't fall for that trap, so mad respect.

There are much better ways they could have worded all of that.

We got the professional version of this.

I think it was indeed PR speak (I personally believe that this is temporary and eventually they'll make it work), but it was just at the border of PR speak, and right behind/between the words they purposely left a hint of annoyed menace.

I feel this was totally lacking some PR person making it a bit... nicer.

Quoting: AussieEeveeBut threatening a ban on players that manage to get the game running under proton is just scummy, Bungie and that makes you one of the scummiest companies in the industry.

They're not. They threaten people that disable the anti cheat with a ban.
Because let's be honest here, the main reason to disable anti cheat... is to cheat

I don't think a company is scummy when they don't support a 1 or 2% market share, their focus and support is simply on other platforms. Like it or not, our market share is just too small for them to actually care (this doesn't make them anti Linux either, they just don't care)

Erm... no?

They're threatening people running the game on Linux with a ban:

QuotePlayers who attempt to bypass Destiny 2 incompatibility will be met with a game ban.

This might be due to fear of cheating, but includes all people who just want to play, and it doesn't even mention anything about cheating.
