The O3D Foundation, who oversee the free and open source Open 3D Engine, have announced that Epic Games are now officially one of their supporters. Epic Games has joined as a Premier member joining the likes of Adobe, AWS, Intel, Microsoft and others in supporting their mission to produce a AAA FOSS game engine.
What we don't exactly know, is what being a supporting member actually gives the The O3D Foundation. Unlike other projects, they don't list the kind of expected resources these companies give over. What we do know at least from this one is that Marc Petit, VP of Unreal Engine Ecosystem at Epic Games, will join the O3DF’s Governing Board.

“The metaverse will require companies to work together to advance open standards and open source tools, and we believe the Open 3D Foundation will play an important role in this journey,” said Petit. “With shared standards for interoperability, we’re giving creators more freedom and flexibility to build interactive 3D content using the tools they’re most comfortable with, and to bring those amazing experiences to life in Unreal Engine and across other 3D engines.”
“We applaud Epic Game’s commitment to the open source community and welcome them into the Open 3D Foundation as our newest Premier member, underscoring our mission in championing the deep integration of open source with commercial solutions to accelerate growth in a sustainable, balanced ecosystem that fuels the flywheel of success and innovation,” said Royal O'Brien, Executive Director of Open 3D Foundation and General Manager of Games and Digital Media at the Linux Foundation. “It’s truly exciting to see how the industry is responding to the real-time 3D needs of content creators around the globe, providing them with best-of-breed tools.”

It used to be Lumberyard, which was a modified CryEngine.

The best part in this race is that you don't know where you wake up in the next morning! For example, you can wake up in hangover in your best friend's bed and and the best part is that there's only your best friend's wife right beside you!
A really cool ending! Or you can find yourself sleeping right on the local anthill in the next morning! A less cooler ending! But again jokes aside. I still don't trust Epic at all. But somehow this is a cool thing to happen when you think there's a rivalry between unreal engine and Open3d. Interesting.

Interesting to speculate on how other large corporations could leverage valves hard work to decouple PC gaming from Windows. There are may others who could take advantage of this decoupling to their benefit not least Epic. Tim talks about hating living under the windows yoke but so far Epics actions don't align with that talk. I think the steam deck represents a discontinuity, players in this problem space are realizing they have more options than they thought they did.

! But this is a off topic thing so no more talk about alcohol. Otherwise master(Liam) will get me banned for good. And I don't want it - yet. But what comes to these news about open 3d engine I think that Godot is more trustworthy and for some reason, I would prefer to use it than open 3d if I were a programmer.
