Tesla and Steam? It's coming and it sounds like it's progressing nicely with a demo to come soon to show it off.
Something that has been in the works for a while, and we already know their entertainment software uses Linux so it will use the Linux version of Steam. This will also include the Proton compatibility tool for running Windows games as well to enable plenty more gaming in your fancy Tesla.
We actually saw hints of this back in 2021, as Tesla were advertising for "Linux Game Development at Tesla" position which you can see via the Wayback Machine. This involved working with "Linux, Mesa, Vulkan, OpenGL, Proton/Lutris, Wine, etc." so it was pretty clear where they were going with it. Add to that Elon Musk said on Twitter in early 2022 that "We’re working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles. Former is obviously where we should be long-term.".
Just recently on July 16, 2022 again on Twitter, Musk said: "We’re making progress with Steam integration. Demo probably next month.".
(Edit: Just to be clear, I'm joking. I'm expecting them to prevent access to games while driving.)

native version is always preferable i guess.
and looks like godot was used to make their ui or something:

Quoting: soulsourceComputer games in a car... What could possibly go wrong?
(Edit: Just to be clear, I'm joking. I'm expecting them to prevent access to games while driving.)
I dunno. Car OSs are all wrong imho.
I can do everything on my android phone while driving. Call people, browse facebook, play angrcy birds, educate myself on youporn. Everything except set a destination on the damn google maps. For which I'm forced to use the car touchscreen, which takes 5 times longer to achieve the same result, if you even can with just keyboard input
(most often you just want to look on the map and click on a spot).
Even if I turn off the car the maps remains locked for minutes so don't even think about taking a advantage of a traffic light or an emergency pitch. I hope there is place in hell for the guy that designed this.
So yes.
Since gaming is something that you shouldn't have to do everyday while driving I'm 100% sure they'll allow it.

The more places games could be played on Linux the better.
It all creates more incentive for game publishers to keep Linux support/Proton compatibility at the back of their minds while planning future game releases.
Awesome !
I get it your passengers want a pastime cause your a boring driver but just get a steam deck ?
Not to mention transportation sickness... Anyone ever tried playing gameboy back in the days ?
I'm all for linux, steam and godot but on a tesla there's just so many sorts of wrong. But who knows, maybe this gonna be the killer app.

Saw what you did!
Quoting: LightkeySo I just learned the other day that Elon Musk was removed as CEO of PayPal because he tried to move the infrastructure from Unix to Windows. Guess he learned his lesson.
That is hilarious. Sadly that is basically what happened to Hotmail after MS bought them. Moved all their stuff from FreeBSD to Windows, and like the majority of all things bought by Microsoft, it turned shitty.

Anyone knows what will happen next time an OS Update is pushed to an operating SpaceX rocket?
Quoting: gradyvuckovicThe more companies invested in the success of Proton/Linux/Wayland/Vulkan/etc, the better.Yeah and in terms of sheer numbers . . . When Tesla's value started to soar, it was purely on spec, people's imagining of what it might become, irrational exuberance, almost getting to the point of "extraordinary popular delusions and the madness of crowds". But the bet could pay off . . . Tesla sales keep nearly doubling every year and they're already at the point where even in terms of raw number of cars sold, they are not a small car company. If they can get their hands on enough battery materiel and keep doubling for a couple more years, they'll be a frigging huge car company.

So for instance (quickly googles), Tesla made 930,000 cars in 2021, and seems clear that 2022 will be bigger. So we're talking about, minimum, a million plus gaming rigs sold per year. Quite likely continuing to grow exponentially for a while, so in a couple years it'll be like 2 million per year. True, lots of these will not be used for gaming, but still, that's a number of units per year bigger than the current total number of Linux users on Steam. This is not a small deal.
