Another two weeks have gone by so the Wine hackers have put out their latest development work with Wine 7.12 now available.

This is the Windows compatibility layer that allows you to run various applications and games on Linux (and forms part of Steam Play Proton). Once a year or so, a new stable release is made but the development versions are usually fine to use.

Wine 7.12 highlights include:

  • Theming support for Qt5 applications.
  • Bundled vkd3d upgraded to version 1.4.
  • Improved effect support in Direct2D.
  • QWORD support in registry tools.
  • Various bug fixes.

Some of the bug fixes for this release include issues solved for Star Citizen, Shogun Total War 2, Argentum 20, Wireshark and others.

Recently they also had the vkd3d 1.4 release of their Direct3D to Vulkan translation library (not to be confused with VKD3D-Proton) which included:

  • Many improvements to the HLSL compiler.
  • A new descriptor heap implementation using the VK_EXT_descriptor_indexing extension.
  • A new fence implementation using the VK_KHR_timeline_semaphore extension.

Wine may not be an emulator but it is excellent. I see two star citizen bug fixes, maybe one day I'll actually play it. I'll have to check out Argentum, haven't heard of it. Thanks for reporting, Liam.

QuoteMany improvements to the HLSL compiler.

Still no improvement for built in d3dcompiler_47 needed for Cyberengine Tweaks to work. With native override it works OK.

I hope that will come soon.
It seems to be affecting quite a few games together with vs runtimes.
