OBS Studio 28.0 Beta 1 brings Linux improvements, lots of new features

OBS Studio is getting another major version bump with OBS Studio 28.0 Beta 1 now available for testing. Lots of big features included in this one, plus some nice Linux client updates.

A major new addition is support for 10-bit and HDR Video Encoding Support, which is sadly limited on Linux (and macOS). For Linux, it's mainly because we don't really have HDR yet but now that OBS has it in, once various parts of Linux are upgraded to support HDR hopefully it won't be too much to get it into OBS then too.

Some major technical changes too like upgrading the internals to Qt 6, since the version OBS was using is no longer supported. So now they have access to the latest features and fixes to keep improving the UI. This does mean that a bunch of plugins will need updating which the OBS team said they're working on with the community, plus some older operating systems are no longer supported like Windows 7 & 8, macOS 10.13 & 10.14, Ubuntu 18.04 and all 32-bit operating systems.

Other new features and tweaks include:

• Added obs-websocket 5.0 as a first-party plugin.
• A new default theme.
• Added native SRT/RIST outputs.
• The ability to automatically split recordings based on file size or duration, or manually via hotkey.
• Support for sending chat messages to YouTube from within OBS.
• Accessibility section added to the settings window.
• CEF (Chromium) updated to version 103 (5060).
• Image sources will now honor the rotation in the EXIF metadata
• Hotkeys now require strict modifiers (exact modifier matches)
• Significantly improved reconnecting when streaming disconnects, including lowering the default reconnect delay to 2 seconds
• + loads more tweaks

Specific to Linux these changes made it in:

• Switched rendering on Linux from GLX to EGL, which should result in a better experience
• Added support for the H264 Format in the Linux V4L2 (video capture device) source
• Fixed an issue where right-side modifiers wouldn't be detected on Linux
