Return to Monkey Island gets a Linux Beta version

By -

Do you own Return to Monkey Island or are you thinking of buying it? Good news, as the developer now has a Native Linux version ready for Beta testing.

The Steam page currently seems to indicate it has Linux support already with the SteamOS icon but it is currently only in Beta for owners of the game. Announced by Ron Gilbert on Twitter, they mentioned you need to head to a special Steam Community forum post, that only owners can access for the instructions.

We knew it was coming, as stated in our original release article as Gilbert said previously it would be "soon after" so it's nice to see a developer deliver on their words for Native Linux fans.

Features:

  • Return to Point & Click Swashbuckling - Bringing classic point and click gameplay to the modern-day, intrepid pirates will solve puzzles and explore the islands with a clever evolution of classic adventure game controls. Context-sensitive interactions, reactive dialog trees, and an easy-to-use inventory system make pirating a breeze.
  • Embark on Archipelago Adventures - Navigate the sometimes-friendly confines of Melee Island, a familiar place that finds itself under new management by leaders who have put the squeeze on old friends and new faces. Venture out into uncharted lands like the aptly named Terror Island and the chilling outposts of Brrr Muda to make allies and enemies alike.
  • Created by a Legendary Crew - The new chapter in the Monkey Island series marks the return of the iconic series’ creator Ron Gilbert, joined by game co-writer Dave Grossman, art director Rex Crowle (Knights & Bikes, Tearaway) and composers Peter McConnell, Michael Land, and Clint Bajakian (Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge).

You can buy it on Humble Store and Steam.

I'll get it the day the native version is official. Thanks, Not-Too-Grumpy-Gamer!

Now that you mention it, so do I! I'm fairly far in the game and would hate to have to restart once I install the Linux version.

The linux logo and linux minimal specs are already there on the game's steam store page, so it's already official, no? Leaving beta at this point is a matter of time, and if they remove support for whatever reason AFAIK you would even be able to get a refund if you bought from linux

Actually, I started playing the Linux Beta on my desktop, and wanted to continue on Deck, but I installed the Proton version by default and the cloud saves wouldn't sync up. It just kept throwing errors. Once I realized that I installed the Windows version on my Deck, I reinstalled it to use Linux version and the cloud saves finally synced. So I think Linux->Windows saves don't work (maybe it's more about different versions rather than the platform difference)... not that it matters much, but it is good to know and beware.

I plan on picking this up once Linux Native support is released officially.

If they dont then I may still pick it up once it hits the sales, so long as its Proton support is good.

Sweet, I actually didn't know it'd be getting a native build! Definitely grabbing it if it gets a GOG release.

Waiting for DRM-free myself. But good to see Linux native!

I was reading last night about TaleSpire 'supporting Linux' by basically letting Proton do the work for them. Granted I also saw a whole lot of the customers complaining because they have two programmers and a bunch of asset makers, and that's it. Just thought it weird to claim they are supporting Linux and macOS, when macOS is getting a native M1 build, but Linux is 'we'll see if it runs with Proton, then pin it there.'

Native builds will always be preferred in my mind. Especially if it isn't a 3rd party porting house.

Hasn't been BETA for a few days now, it doesn't indicate BETA anywhere anymore.

Bought it a few days ago. Initially it worked, but somehow it always maxed out a CPU core on my system. This has been fixed after a few game updates and now it runs perfect. I really like it so far. The graphics/art style also fits in my opinion.
I’m also very grateful that they went the extra mile to go for a native Linux version.
