Ubisoft making a return to Steam with Assassin's Creed Valhalla on December 6th

First we disliked Steam as a launcher (as it required an internet connection)
Then we disliked publishers leaving steam in favor of their own launcher.
No we dislike them for coming back and bringing their launcher with it... causing launcher-ception!

It's not too bad, and better having them again back on Steam for better deck compatibility, but it's still a bit annoying.

Funny though, e.g. for Starlink: Battle for Atlas they removed the Uplay-Installer... but it's mandatory for the game, so if you don't have Uplay already installed it neither launches on Windows. On Linux you have to use winetricks/protontricks to install Uplay into the prefix to be able to play it. Otherwise it works flawless, also on Deck, even with videos (which didn't work before due to mpflat).

No matter the size, I find Steam more consumer friendly—even allowing end users to mod their games and make spin-offs without restrictive, we own everything about this game (looking at you, Activision-Blizzard!) EULAs and even hosting said games— tl;dr I support Steam because I feel they're less likely to pull the rug out from under end users' legs

I've been playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey lately. Unfortunately on my desktop (running an nvidia 3080 RTX) it does not perform well enough under Linux, and the frame rate keeps dipping. Under Windows 10 it ran flawlessly, with HDR and all on (granted I had to turn off my 2nd and 3rd monitor to get HDR to work, and maybe that'd also help the framerate in Linux).

That being said, for some dumb reason, Ubisoft Connect times out after I've played it so long and just logs me out (even after telling it again and again to keep me logged in.) so if I want cloud sync to work, I have to re-login with all my credentials and 2fa after I play it for sessions longer than whatever that time out is... Then I upgraded to Windows 11. Now it keeps me logged into Ubisoft Connect, but the game locks up when I try to quit it. I can't win...

On the flip side of this, Odyssey works quite well on the Steam Deck. Granted it's not trying to push 3840x1200 like it is on my desktop.

I'm actually waiting for Ghost Recon Breakpoint. But getting ACV might be a good sign :)

They really saw how well perceived and issue-free origin atop of steam is and thought to themselves: well, that looks like something the customers would LOVE us to do too!

Well, go F yourself then, still won't buy your shit if you pull that nonsense that literally has not one single benefit while bringing a whole load of potential and real drawbacks/problems with it.

But probably enough 'i don't care' people will throw money at them to show them we gamers don't care if we are f'ed over...

Uplay = I won't play. Not interested in 3rd party launchers.

Did they remove Denuvo yet?

The fun thing? For all that time I didn't even realize that they weren't on Steam anymore. That's how much I care about their stuff. :D

See, the problem with dual booting like that is that both platforms sense you're a filthy traitor. If you don't take that into account you won't be sacrificing nearly enough chickens to keep them appeased.

Don't compare it with the original assassins creed games, it's a nice game on it's own, it is huge though and as BA would say "I pity the fool who gets the full game and all dlc's" it is huge, easy 200+ hour sync. But the "forgotten saga" is worth a special mention, it was by far one of the most refreshing rogue like game I played in a long time, especially if you go for the achievements like reaching and killing end boss without using a shrine. Feels so impossible at first but amazing when you complete it.

After all these years I still know very little about Assassin's Creed. The impression I get, though, is that in the later games

• You don't play an assassin


• You don't have a creed

um . . .

Assassin's Creed ended with III. The main story writer left and it shows, all the metaplot just dried up and blew away. All the later games are just stabbing-simulator with more weapons/outfits/etc added periodically. The new settings/times are neat, and I own them all, but I resent them.

Uplay has been running fine on my Deck, though, so this should be a net win.

nice to have ubisoft back. i like AC and FC. splinter cell remake and hopefully a new prince of persia
but i hate the launcher. just a waste of DISC and RAM. especially on the stream deck you do not need more junk wasting RAM

Microsoft prefers that you sacrifice goats, and Linux always sacrifices children. Don't worry, your kids are safe, it's only children of naughty parent processes that get sacrificed.

You usually can skip them though. It can be annoying, but it's not as annoying as buying a game on their launcher.

I hope they will add their subscription service to Steam, just like EA Play sub is available on Steam.

Both Odyssey and Origins literally make me want to visit these places in real life (Greece and Egypt) though I suspect Greece still has some of the beauty left over from the game, whereas Egypt looks very different now.
But yeah, you do still play an Assassin... sort of. Because the Hashshashin, from which the word Assassin comes from did not exist until the late 11th century.

So if you really had been called an assassin, it would have been historically inaccurate.

shame I already bought this on uplay due to a bug that gave me the $100 version for $10

Seems like the kind of game I would enjoy, but I’ve generally given up on buying games from AAA studios. Between the launcher idiocy and required account creation, the user-disrespecting EULAs/privacy policies and the strong tendency to require a connection to their servers for anything to work even for offline play, which inevitably breaks at some point, the grief just doesn’t seem worth it.
