Paradox Interactive sure know their strategy games and their audience, as Victoria 3 has already sold over half a million in the space of a month. Victoria 3 is a sandbox simulation of the world between 1836 and 1936, a century of rapid technological innovation, social transformation and political revolution ICYMI: read our review.

Sharing the details over a press email, Paradox said "Victoria 3, has sold 500,000 units since its release on October 25, making it one of the most successful launches in Paradox history". It's been nominated for the "Best Sim/Strategy" at The Game Awards (where you can win a Steam Deck).

“Seeing Victoria 3 nominated for this year’s Game Awards is a career-defining moment and we couldn’t be happier to share this achievement with our players,” Martin Anward, the Game Director for Victoria 3 at Paradox Development Studio, said. “Our players made all of this possible and it’s only the beginning. We are committed to supporting Victoria 3 and will continue to add more content to the game.”

Turned Prussia yellow? Annexed by Austria, or am I missing something?

Now all they need is something set in an interplanetary-exploration-in-our-solar-system era and you could go from Rome to Stellaris.

ha, wonder what that would look like. From like 1950s to 3xxx? You'd be stuck converting up to Stellaris to play humans, or some civilization that conquered them :P (which at this point is probably more likely!)

It's not a Paradox game, but the recently-released Terra Invicta (by the studio created by the guys who made the Long War XCOM mod) is a grand-strategy game which fits that "early solar system exploration with alien combat" theme to a T.

I was actually thinking less "alien combat" and more "conflicts between Earth, Mars, the asteroid miners of the Belt, and the 'outer planets moons' crowd".

Apparently it has that too, though I'll caveat all this by saying that I haven't played it yet, merely watched a video or two; but basically you play as one of…"several" (I think ~8?) different secret society-like organizations, with the initial stage of the game being consolidating control over a number of modern-day countries in order to start a new space race, where you then expand control out to the solar system. (And as an astronomer whose first love was the solar system, the map and its level of detail has me positively drooling.) So there are aliens, but there are also (many more) other human factions, and you'll be fighting the ones opposed to your take on the aliens (and the aliens, if you aren't one of the alien-friendly factions).

(I'm selling myself on it now, but I need to actually get around to playing Victoria 3 again first… 😅)
