RPCS3 is a free and open source PlayStation 3 emulator, and they hit a huge milestone for compatibility recently.
While they don't have any recent blog posts, they did take to Twitter to announce that the "Loadable" category has hit zero games. This means that all games can at least boot up now, although there's still a fair few that will display an image but don't make it past the menus although that list is short too at only 2.56% of the overall library they're tracking. They're also tracking 28.96% noted as only just able to get in-game but have issues preventing them being fully playable (performance, bugs etc).
A long road and emulator development is certainly challenging, great to see it continue on though.

Despite what the likes of Sony, Microsoft, and most notoriously Nintendo think of emulation outside of their own stores (which are often sorely lacking) — it's vital for preservation.

That's great! Alas on my system any version newer than alpha 0.18 won't run anything (regardless of Flatpak or AppImage). I dumped most of my games using a supported BD Drive (and even jailbroke my PS3 to re-dump to disk and transfer via sftp, with the same results and lots of invested time).

Yup. I just gave Red Dead Redemption GOTY a whirl and all cores of my CPU are utilised by 100% and the game still only runs at ~ 20 FPS and crashes again and again. With a couple of graphical and sound glitches it's close to unplayable (mind you, its status according to the RPCS3 website is "Ingame", which means it still has some serious glitches; so I knew what I was up to).
Nonetheless, I think what the project has achieved so far is absolutely amazing and I'm really impressed. And I'm sure that other games have less problems and may even work perfectly fine.

I know. But I currently don't have my PS3 (and respective games) with me and frankly, if I had, I would probably rather play my games straight on the PS3 than trying to get them to work on my PC. ;-)

Kept on trying different settings in RPCS3 and enabled hyper-threading for my CPU and that definitely did the trick. CPU load is now at ~ 40% and the games plays at +/- 30 FPS, so pretty much at its original FPS on the PS3. I also managed to get rid of the graphical and sound glitches and played through the first couple of missions without any crashes. Seems to be pretty stable now as well.
I'm so amazed! Sure, Red Dead Redemption does not look as good and impressive as RDR2, but it still looks fairly good to me. I also like its story and some of the game mechanics better, such as being able to buy safe houses. And I really like its main protagonist, John Marston, and the overall atmosphere of the game. Still one of the best games I've ever played and I'm really happy being able to play it again on PC now.

Oh wow, I coincidentally bought a compatible blu-ray drive when I was replacing the dead DVD drive in my PC. Guess I'll be keeping an eye at my Value Village for games to buy and dump.
