Dwarf Fortress made over $7 million in January

By -

Something that's completely deserved of course. The Dwarf Fortress developers shared that the game made over $7,230,000 in January.

The news was shared on the official forum in their latest monthly report. They do make it clear, that they don't get to keep all of that as a bit less than half "will go to taxes" and they have to pay people, they have all the usual business expenses and so on but of course they will still get a lot of money from it overall. Enough that they've " solved the main issues of health/retirement that are troubling for independent people, as well as safeguarded the future of the game".

How much they made over the last few months:

  • January: $7,230,123.58.
  • December: $15,635.07.
  • November: $14,071.27.
  • October: $15,374.72.
  • September: $14,679.51.

While it's amazing to see and fully deserved, this isn't exactly the kind of success a lot of indie teams can reproduce though. They have a lot of unique factors at play here including putting it out free for many years before their Steam release, which had numerous upgrades like the official graphics along with the health problems the developer faces which no doubt has spoke to hearts of many people.

If you've been playing it, how many hours have you sunk into it since the Steam release? It's playable with Proton but a Native Linux port is planned.

I didn't put in that many hours since release. Just 50 or so...
Compared to the time I played the game before the Steam release, that's basically nothing.

I got fed up with the slowness of the new UI. I get that some people want to point and click stuff, but the 'classic' keyboard bindings are sooooo much faster (especially if you've used them for years and it's pretty much muscle memory at this point). I pretty much see Steam DF as a gateway drug to classic.

Doesn't the new "classic" build use the same UI?

I do agree, btw. The old UX was not great, but it was thought through, worked, and was incredibly fast to use, once one remembered the keybindings.

Dunno, the latest build is only on Windows right now and I haven't checked it in wine/proton. I'll be very disappointed if it's just the steam version with the updated tileset stripped out.

I quickly tried it on my Windows PC at work. It's indeed the Steam version without the tileset and without the soundtrack.

I've supported it for some time in the past and bought it straight away when it released.
My Steam library only says 24 hours, but I've got more in classic version. :)

I don't even want to think about the bandwidth usage... I somehow doubt that the game supports xdamage reporting.
