The 2023 Steam Spring Sale is now live, and with it Valve has put the Steam Deck on sale for the first time.

In all supported regions (including Asia), you can now pick up a Steam Deck with 10% off. Just over a year since release seems like a good time for it to be on sale don't you think? On top of that, you can now officially customize your Steam Deck Startup Movie. In the Settings -> Customization, with no system update needed, it's now live. You can buy them with Steam Points, and the system they built supports the custom movies you've been able to add for a while.

You can preview them online in your browser here, and they work in Desktop Big Picture Mode too.

Valve also did a little birthday video for the Steam Deck:

Valve even did a special page on Steam for this event, listing the Top 100 games played on Steam Deck with loads of them going on sale for the Spring Sale too! So a good chance to pick up some new games to play through. I know I'll be having a good look.

Also be sure to check out my latest video going over some recent updates and Steam Deck news:

Of course it's not all about the Steam Deck, the sale is across the whole of Steam with thousands of developers and publishers jumping in with many discounts. The whole sale runs until March 23rd.

You can check out the full Steam Spring Sale here.

Do give your best recommendations on what to pick up in the comments for either Desktop Linux or Steam Deck.

Still haven't opened mine 🥲
I use it as a big carrot for finishing my PhD manuscript :/

Edit: for more context, I received it about one year ago.

I've got questions: You didn't open it to test if it works? Are you sure that setting a daily time limit to spend on the SD wouldn't have been a better idea?

Edit: I might want PowerWash Simulator, but I'm not sure if it is worth 20 €…

Is Your Wallet Ready???

No, it's currently in a corner crying. I've been trying to coax it out of a fetal position all day.

My mind isn't either; between Steam, Humble, GoG, Fanatical, and GreenManGaming, I haven't been able to choose for fear of missing a bigger discount. Meaning: I probably should just play what I've got instead.

So that is why Steam storefront won't load. Thought my WiFi is acting up again.

NASCAR Heat 4: Gold Edition
NASCAR Heat 5: Ultimate Edition

NASCAR Heat 5....

You cant see the livery to well... And sadly the game does not have a car showroom option which is stupid.... So I will add a picture below of the livery..... As raced by Clint Bowyer at Talladega in 2020......

I'm thinking of getting Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, because I need reason to purchase a new monitor… after I toss my controller thru it.

Maybe buy calming herbal tea instead ?

I finally broke down and bought the damn thing. And then I used the $40 I saved to buy an SD card. And now I'm trawling through a myriad of dock and hub options...

I never thought they would make a discount for deck, wow.

Interesting suggestion. Perhaps, but then it wouldn't work as a carrot anymore. I also made that choice before purchasing it (initially it was "I'll finish before receiving it").

Anyway, hopefully I'll open it in about a week :P

Edit for your other question: No, I haven't opened it at all; I've actually considered if it was worth keeping like that as a collector item, but the lithium battery won't last. Technically, I think manufacturers should honor a 2-years warranty, so I'm still in the green if it doesn't work.

Re-reading the title, I understood it as a new default boot animation during the sale event. That would be a nice touch (if can be disabled).

I think the sales are pretty bad, compared to what it was. My wishlist is more than 500 items, and i’m close to 24000 "discovered games". Only a few are 50% price, many 30%, and a great amount are 10%. I remember sales being rarer, but 75 to 95%. Not sure about the devs cut etc, but as a egoist consumer point of view, it certainly is worst. Now every few weeks or months, prices are cut "a little".

If i had a Steam Deck, i would not know what to play. I almost never play with a pad, and last time i played console, it was on the very first Nintendo DS, some Mario games and something with brain training stuff, i think. Maybe i would play 2D Fighting games however ? I like quite complex games with plenty of buttons to click... Also when i play, i often stop for a few minutes, check emails, write notes, look at some news, etc. It feels it would be very unconfortable to do so on a Deck.

Lol, not yet unfortunately. I'll post an update here if you are curious :P

I feel this is either asymptotic (Ninety-ninety rule, or I'm very bad with estimates (could be both...)

Some people waste years polishing their work so they never finish it. You have to know when you've done enough.

On the other hand it's very annoying if you find a typo in the last paragraph just after printing and binding.

You will, no matter how long you polish. I recommend to not ever look into it again. :)

True. Better burn all physical copies and delete all digital artefacts.

Soo... the week turned into a month, partly because my advisor was very busy organizing a conference, and then took a holiday. Partly because I'm a perfectionist :P

But I sent it on Friday evening, and opened my Steam Deck on Sunday

To be honest, I'm still a bit too busy to play: I installed the updates, made a test for a proton compatibility report I was asked questions on, and... I've been working with it as my main computer since.

You see, I had computer issues about a year ago, where my laptop motherboard fried (probably the power supply). I extracted the SSD, and booted off it on my desktop PC (hail Linux). A few months ago, this setup started randomly acting up (SSD getting disconnected for a few seconds, which kills my session). Possibly due to a kernel update. So I switched to an old laptop (~2012 Macbook Air), but it was painful to only have 4GB of RAM and a measly CPU.

Fast forward now, I just boot my SSD off the Steam deck. After a few hiccups (I had to try desktop mode on SteamOS before both external screens worked after KMS, and it's horribly tempting to unplug the boot drive), the setup works extremely well, and suspend-to-RAM is the most reliable I've seen in years. Even though my setup is Steam Deck -> Screen via USB-C -> SSD via USB-A and second display via DP MST.

I'm impressed with the perf/cost of this "tiny PC with integrated screen and inputs". The fan is just a bit loud.
