Valve has now released two small graphics driver updates for Steam Deck OS (SteamOS) 3.4.8, which means the Preview update channel is now ready for a big update to drop.

The updates included in 3.4.8 are:

  • Updated graphics driver with a fix for a GPU crash in Splitgate.
  • Updated the graphics driver with performance improvements for STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor.

These were left in the Preview channel for a while but now the Preview channel is empty, meaning the update many have been waiting for could be readying to drop into Preview real soon. We also haven't seen a major stable update in some time but Valve are constantly updating the Beta with client-side changes that eventually they will bundle into a stable update too.

SteamOS 3.5 is going to bring with it quite a lot including a Linux kernel upgrade, likely an updated KDE Plasma desktop version, more graphics driver upgrades, various additions to Gaming Mode like Soundtrack support and Screen Colour settings (teased in one of my videos), adjustments to the performance overlay and no doubt plenty more.

Even Valve developer Pierre-Loup Griffais is doing a tiny little tease on Twitter:

This is out in Stable now, so Preview is nice and empty. 👀

What are you hoping that the new SteamOS upgrade brings with it?

Updated the graphics driver with performance improvements for STAR WARS Jedi: Survivor.

Has anyone already tried? Is it at least playable now?

I sincerely hope that with the new kernel my racing wheel is going to work. I'm pretty confident though, since it works on my Arch machine as expected.

I hope the kernel update won't bring the AMD DisplayPort regression that happened in 6.1.

It's still occasionally a pain when booting my Steam Deck on vanilla Arch and plugging it in an external display, though it's been improving.

Maybe we'll finally see some HDR work land?

Well it would be nice if they could include nftables and firewalld, even if disabled by default. The fact that the steam deck ships with no firewall seems like a massive oversight to me, particularly when things like kde connect and steam link exist on it. Would also like ossp installed by default for retro gaming compatibility, it's one package and it's annoying to reinstall these things every time steamos clobbers the file system with an update.

Okay, I know this is not a realistic reply, but I really do wish the next update brings a redesign of the individual game pages. Every time I browse through my games, I have to either click through to the community page or the store page on each and every game, in order to remember what kind of game I'm looking at.
Something closer to EmulationStation, with a couple of screenshots of the game, would be immensely helpful in wading through large libraries!

Still waiting for a battery charge limit so that I can play plugged in without the battery going to 100% and then remaining stored at 100%, which is harmful
