I'll be the first to admit that we're a bit late on this news as the sale started Monday, but the Steam Strategy Fest is up and has some awesome deals on strategy game classics. As a fan of Warcraft and Halo Wars, it's very nice to see this oft forgotten genre of game get some love. If you can only choose one, I'd highly recommend Civilization VI Anthology. Because $209 worth of content for $25 is an amazing deal but the other tiers, Base and Platinum, are great deals as well. Runner up goes to the X-COM 2 Collection with $132 worth of content for $12.04.
Of course, I'm still salty that Blizzard hasn't brought Starcraft or Warcraft to Steam nor did Microsoft put Halo Wars on sale. But it's fine, there's plenty of other games to choose from. I'll probably get X-COM and maybe Phoenix Point, which I shouted out because it's made by the original developer of the 90's X-COM.

Can't go wrong with the X-Com games, even if they're not as good as the original Amiga games (fortunately openxcom scratches that itch).

But in practice I ended up finding them kind of annoying and fiddly, especially in the late game if I started finding that what with specialty districts and housing and stuff, I had used up too much of my good land on my best cities . . . which is kind of realistic I suppose, except with real cities you just expand the hinterland you supply 'em from.

One thing I found odd about Phoenix Point, which I picked up a year or two ago to see how it compared to XCOM 1/2, was the complete absence of music during tactical missions. There's nothing inherently wrong with such a choice, but in this day and age it does make the game feel like it's unfinished or they forgot to hire a composer or something. (It doesn't have be bombastic or noticeable, just a quiet, mildly-unsettling bit would seem to fit the theme quite well. I did like some aspects of it (the aiming in the 3D world, enemies with multiple damageable bits, vehicles in missions), but ultimately it didn't hold my interest long enough to finish a campaign. I really should get back to it sometime…

Really close to the originals X-Com, there's Xenonauts. I started playing it last week, and I'm hooked. It's way more difficult and tense than the modern XCOM 1/2. It's really difficult not to lose one or two agents per mission in the beginning, when you're severely outgunned. I don't remember loosing a lot of people playing the modern XCOMs.
The game is a bit rough around the edges, tho. On linux, don't play the native version but the windows one, and even the beta branch with the "community edition". Xenonauts 2 is currently in early access, it seems better in every part than the first one, but currently unfinished, it has a lot of things missing, but I think I'll use this "strategy fest" to buy it, as it's -25%.
Battle Brothers is on sale, also. It's a must-have for turn by turn tactical games lovers. Don't be fooled by the graphics, it's an hidden gem, and i'm eager for the next game of overhype studio they announced last week (after 10 years polishing Battle Brothers), Menace.

X-COM 1/2 just make me mad. Phoenix Point looks like the exact same game, so I won't touch it. My glory days of Fire Emblem appear to be wearing out as I get older. Sad.
