Coming from the developers of the excellent Scarlet Hollow, their next game Slay the Princess is set to launch on October 20 with full Native Linux support and it looks great. Save the princess? How about no. You're supposed to slay her apparently. Well this is a bit different isn't it.

Facilitate fate in an evolving drama drenched in monochromatic hand-penciled art from Ignatz-winning graphic novelist Abby Howard (The Crossroads at Midnight, The Last Halloween). Experience déjà vu like never before in a branching meta-narrative that unfolds its story in warped, hilarious, and unpredictable ways. Slay or be slain (or find a third option?) as each loop contorts to reflect each decision, forming a story with new twists and turns each playthrough. Begin the quest anew, joined by new personalities attempting to guide your actions.

Game Features:

  • Fully voice-acted by the impeccable Jonathan Sims and Nichole Goodnight.
  • Hand-penciled art - every background and sprite is drawn traditionally with pencil and paper by Ignatz-winning graphic novelist Abby Howard.
  • A princess. She's very bad and you have to get rid of her for all our sakes.
  • No, the Princess isn't a cosmic horror. She's just an ordinary human Princess, and you can definitely slay her as long as you put your mind to it.
  • Don't even think about trying to romance her. It won't end well for you.
  • Hopefully you won't die. But if you do, you'll die a lot. Be careful and stay focused on the task at hand!
  • Time loops No time loops. Don't be ridiculous. Time is a strictly linear concept and it certainly doesn't "loop," whatever that's supposed to mean.
  • A branching narrative where what you say and what you believe determines both who you are and how the story unfolds.
  • A new roleplaying experience from the creators of Scarlet Hollow.

“It starts out simple,” says Tony Howard-Arias, Lead Writer at Black Tabby Games. “And, ultimately, it stays simple — the premise never changes. You’re here to slay the Princess, and you need to slay her to save the entire world. But trust is a fragile thing, and the context around the goal changes dramatically the more decisions you make and the more you develop your relationship with the characters and the world. We’re really excited to see how everyone navigates these surreal gray waters.”

The previous game, Scarlet Hollow, also had full Native Linux support and is Steam Deck Verified. So I expect Slay the Princess will also be Steam Deck Verified at some point since it also has full controller support.

You can follow it on Steam.

Jonathan Sims will be familiar to fans of the horror podcast The Magnus Archives, an apt choice here.

Nicole Goodnight appears to also come from the world of supernatural fiction podcasts, particularly one called Shadow & Smoke. Seems well cast here in any case.

It looks like it will also be available on Itch.io and GOG when it launches for those who prefer alternatives:
