The team and community behind OpenRCT2, the open source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 have a brand new update out which includes some fun changes like a whole new title theme.

For this update they commissioned Allister Brimble, who worked on the original soundtrack, to compose a new official piece for OpenRCT2. To go along with that, the developers held a contest to include a bunch of new parks in the background of the menu to spruce it up a bit.

Some of the main additions in OpenRCT2 0.4.6 include:

  • Feature: [#15660] Ability to show window buttons on the left.
  • Feature: [#20680] New title sequences (https://github.com/OpenRCT2/title-sequences/releases/tag/v0.4.6).
  • Feature: [OpenMusic#41] Official Title Theme by Allister Brimble.
  • Improved: [#20119, #20243] Add new colour presets to several roller coasters (using the new colours).
  • Improved: [#20393, #20410] Add Cyrillic characters Ґґ, Ѕѕ, Єє, Іі, Її, and Јј to the sprite font.
  • Change: [#19785] OpenMusic is now selected by default when opening SC4/SC6 - or creating new - scenarios.
  • Change: [#20110] Fix a few RCT1 build height parity discrepancies.

Plus the usual assorted bug fixes. Like the Camera and UI are no longer locked at 40 Hz, providing a smoother experience which is actually quite a big change for it and really should make it feel a lot better. And for those of you who appreciate the screams of your guests, they're no longer cut off on steep diagonal drops.

The developers also mentioned to me over email that "OpenRCT2 had RISC-V port for 6 years now, well before any hardware was available" and that with "real CPUs becoming available, some people have started trying it" which you can see on YouTube.

You need the data files to actually play it. You can buy a copy from GOG or Steam. See more on the OpenRCT2 website.

Getting it running on Linux is nice and simple too since they offer an official AppImage and there's also a Flatpak available via Flathub. Just run it, and then it will ask you to point it to where you installed the original and that's all you need to do! Nice and easy.

The theme rewrite sounds very fitting - it keeps true to the original, but has a fresh new experience even for those who played the original
