Steam SHMUP Fest is live now

By -

Ready for the pew pew pew? Steam is hosting their very own SHMUP Fest, so keep an eye out for stray bullets heading towards your wallet.

Live now until October 2nd 10AM PT / 5PM UTC there's discounts and demos across many different games that in some way get classed as a shoot-em-up. As we know, Steam is often quite generous on what it allows to be tagged so you might find some rather odd picks in there.

To get you going here's a few picks of games I think are quality and discounted right now:

Check out the SHMUP Fest here.

If you do find anything particularly entertaining, do come back and give us a comment with your thoughts. Help out your fellow GOL readers to find their next SHMUP to kill some time with.

You guys make me feel like an old nerd or something... I've never seen "SHMUP" before lol

(I had to see the list of games to clue in that it was a contraction of "shoot em up"... rather than some new kind of RPG acronym or something)

QuoteThe term "shmup" is believed to have been coined in 1985 by the British Commodore 64 magazine Zzap!

The term might be older than you in fact.

Older than my gaming/computing days, 1985 Commodore. Other than some poky-stabby use of a pharmacy dispensary computer, I wasn't using computers pre-1985.

I think it was about 1987 or so when we got a DOS computer at home. I had a few silly games on 5.25 inch floppy that I got from others. Back then you'd sys the disk and configure DOS for the game and boot with it :-)

My first exposure to Unix was around then too, the university campus I went to had a Unix environment. "The genuine AT&T Unix" as boasted by profs lol

At first I read Shrimp Fest 😋
I had to read it again, but now I’m hungry.

There are a fair few games in this genre that I've enjoyed over the years, so off I go to take a look - and possibly to make my wallet wince.

Crimsonland and Neon Chrome are both good. Tesla vs Lovecraft is also good, but isn't in the sale.

Everyday you get a free sticker by going to the shmup sale page and claiming it......... The same as if it was a major sale.......
