Cassette Beasts is probably one of the best modern creature collecting games around, and early in 2024 it's getting online multiplayer. This update was due this year but they said it needs a little more time in the oven to get it right.

Not heard of it before? It's a Steam Deck Verified and Native Linux game from developer Bytten Studio. Released in April 2023, it currently has an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam. You collect strange monsters with old cassette tapes, and use the fusion system to combine any two monsters together to make tons of different forms.

After getting a number of questions on the upcoming online update they've released a quick teaser on some of the features that will be added:

When playing online, you'll be able to:

  • Party up with up to 8 friends, all visible in your world!
  • Battle your friends, and even assign custom rules to your battle such as enabling/disabling sticker attributes!
  • Trade tapes with each other!
  • Team up for raid battles against Rogue Fusions!

Something that's not entirely clear yet is if all features will allow for cross-play between platforms, they're hoping to make that more clear at some point later. Multiplayer is complicated enough for a small team even on a single platform but hopefully they will be able to do cross-play too.

You can buy it from:

Humble Store

8 players?? How does that work? Is it battles only for online multiplayer?
