Challenging platformer VVVVVV gets a big upgrade and now Steam Deck Verified

VVVVVV is an indie classic from Terry Cavanagh that just got a nice juicy upgrade with version 2.4 now officially released that brings with it a Steam Deck Verified status.

Not only is VVVVVV now Steam Deck Verified but the update includes translations into 21 languages, improved custom level support, lots of bug fixes, an upgrade to the SDL version used, it's swapped over from SDL_mixer to FAudio for audio, performance improvements as it's moved from being mostly CPU-based to being mostly GPU-based (via SDL's 'render' subsystem) and much much more.

A lot of this is thanks to the source code release on GitHub, although it's not open source, and instead uses a custom license but that hasn't stopped people contributing to improve it.

More about the game:

Help! Everyone has been teleported away randomly! As the heroic Captain Viridian, it's up to you to find your friends, bring them back to safety, and save the universe!

VVVVVV is a platform game all about exploring one simple mechanical idea - what if you reversed gravity instead of jumping?

The game is designed not to artificially gate your progress. In VVVVVV there are no locks, no power-ups, no switches, nothing to stop you progressing except the challenges themselves.

Man! I remember when VVVVVV was new, and now it's 14 years later and it's still being supported!

Judging by the title, I got excited thinking the game had an expansion of some sort, more levels or something. Oh well.

The upgrades are nice and all, but that game takes lots of patience to complete. Unless I get super nostalgic for it (and yes, it has been a while), I'm not doing it :p

I don't consider myself a good gamer nor a completionist, but I finished VVVVVV twice. One of my favorite games of all time :)

Just looking at the screenshot fills me with rage. Not my kind of game at all...

I remember playing this when it first came out on the 3DS eShop all those years ago... maybe this will encourage me to revisit it. I still have yet to check out the level editor

Is it that old?
When I got the GPD Win in 2016, that was one of the first games I played on it. I guess that was over seven years ago, time flies

Yeah! It was originally released as a Flash game in 2010, then there were Linux and Nintendo 3DS releases the following year, and it ended up all over the place from there.

Same. I've collected all 20 trinkets at least twice on PC, and once on Android too. It also has one of my all time favorite soundtracks, which I still listen to regularly.

I just noticed that the game got a lot more language support with this update, including Catalan, Silesian and Welsh. It's always nice to see games become available to more people.
