Valve has released SteamOS 3.5.14 Preview for Steam Deck, which comes with performance improvements for the new Persona 3 Reload amongst other things.

Since it's currently in Preview if you wish to try it you need to go into the System settings, and change the System Update Channel to Preview in the drop-down box. Here's what's changed (changelog):

  • Improved performance of ray-traced reflections in Persona 3 Reload.
  • Slightly improved corner tracking on Steam Deck OLED trackpads.
  • Fixed a possible session crash when connecting an HDR display.
  • Fixed a rare session crash on application exit.

Don't go expecting some kind of miracle though, ray tracing on Steam Deck is pretty tough.

Additionally a Steam Deck Beta update was also released with these changes (changelog):

  • Fixed misc. regressions in the screenshot manager.
  • Fixed transparency and blur on header and app details play bar.
  • Fixed graph height on downloads page.
  • Fixed wide game images sometimes failing to load.
  • Fix custom logo positions sometimes not applying on app details pages.

I'm hoping that the fix for in-home streaming gets promoted to stable, and they've sorted out the display quality issues, before I get my OLED model soon.

I don't think Persona 3 Reload makes it clear, but the "Reflections" setting is what toggles ray-tracing. On desktop at 4k and Steam Deck at 800p, I don't see any visual difference, but I a massive performance boost on Steam Deck with it disabled (although the game does drop to ~50fps in quite a few areas, and toggling any other setting apart from resolution scale doesn't help).

The Preview channel seems to have helped performance by a lot though, the "Reflections" setting has much less overhead.

To me the „raytracing“ sometimes looks even worse as some floors that are polished marble, reflect like they’re mirrors

This in-home streaming bugginess has really been crappy for my Deck useage. Either the video freezes entirely, with sound and input continuing, or, I get a green screen error. I tried out the Beta fix but I prefer being on Stable channel. I should really just install Moonlight...

I don't get that. There was the dead sound issue that had hung around for years on Linux and eventually got fixed after the Deck had been out a year, but then with the recent stable update after the OLED released the stream is just way too dark on the Deck. Apparently there's a fix in preview, and disabling hardware decoding acts as a workaround. I don't use streaming that much (in-between breakages, obviously) because it needs to be a specific middle ground game where I'd prefer the performance of the desktop but not the spectacle of the big screen. Outside of that middle I'm either playing directly on the Deck or playing directly on the desktop. But it would be nice if it worked.

It's only the reflections in windows and mirrors, it doesn't really matter overall though, but it completely removes reflections if you turn it off.
