Starting 2024 off strong, Valve has seen Steam smash the all-time record once again for users actually online showing that weekends are a busy time for gamers.

According to SteamDB the record of 34,649,583 people online was hit Sunday, March 3rd at 2PM UTC and at the time 11,146,564 players were actually in game too. Steam has been regularly hitting over 33 million since January, but managed to first hit over 34 million on Saturday, March 2nd and then smashed the record again on Sunday.

Going by the stats the most popular games were:

  • Counter-Strike 2
  • Dota 2
  • PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS
  • Apex Legends
  • Helldivers 2

Seems like 2024 is going to be another massive year for Valve. 2023 was already pretty crazy with Steam users redeeming over $80 million in physical wallet cards.

What were you playing this weekend? As you might have gathered, I was playing plenty of Helldivers 2. Freedom isn't going to bring itself to the galaxy.

I was revisiting Super Bomberman R (Proton) properly for the first time since it got fully fixed up in Proton last year, since it was the 7th anniversary of its launch on Sunday March 3rd. It's still a bit crashy in places (usually when calling pre-boss or post-boss FMVs), but that's not a Proton issue - the PC port is just a bit unstable, unfortunately, and they fixed it for the games that came after it. SBR is still a great game seven years on, and I love it and its wholesome bright optimism even more now than I did then.

I also played through the considerably more melancholy Orebody: Binder's Tale (Proton) and was caught a bit off-guard by it having a sad ending. Also a great experience, but since the Steam release is actually an emulator-wrapped NES game made in the style of the time, its difficulty might be offputting to some folks out there.

Well, Bomberman's job is to bring peace to the entire universe, so there's a bit of "dinosaur who eats forcefield dogs"-style one-upmanship for you!

What's that? Bomberman discovered oil? Sounds like we need to bring some freedom.

I played a couple of hours of Pacific Drive on Friday, mainly testing out my new Movemaster. But I spent the bulk of the weekend spreading democracy in HellDivers 2, and building up a new character in the awesome Last Epoch.

Funnily enough, HD2 is regularly hitting 300K players, and Last Epoch is well over 200K. Last Epoch definitely surfing a popularity wave, stealing players from Path of Exile, which is down at the 15K mark (although it'll typically rebound to around 150K easily when a new season launches) and Diablo 4 which lucky to see 10K players these days.

Crazy numbers really, considering these two games are barely even top five (Countersrike, DOTA2, Apex Legends, etc, as noted in the article). No wonder Steam is hitting new highs!

My Summer Car.
I hate it because its ruining my life...I love it because theres nothing else like it.

Strong contender for my most played game this year. Nearing 100h for around a month is HUGE for me.

been losing countless hours in Last Epoch. Did some speed leveling this weekend in the monolith starting at around lvl 40. That was kind of a mistake I think, because after doing like 10 stages, and leveling up like 15 levels, I equipped all my new gear and affixes and went back to the campaign. It's SO BORING now. It's just a walking sim now. I'm a falconer, but there isn't even a point in using my main attack (bombs) because the bird kills anything that moves instantly. Even elites. For bosses all I do is stand still, smoke bomb, and spam attack. I don't even have to move.

LOL.

I do LOVE the monolith though! Some of those stages are so fun clearing. Right now I'm just trying to get through the campaign as fast as possible.

I leave my PC always on, with Steam running. I'm doing my part in skewing the stats!

As for the played games, the usual ones:

EVE Online
Seven Days to Die
The Front
Pax Dei
Shroud of the Avatar
GTAV
Elite: Dangerous
Shakes & Fidget (often forgotten running)

Helldivers 2 is almost exclusively the only game I've been playing since it came out. It's wonderful co-op. Will it hold my interest long enough to put as many hours as Deep Rock Galactic? Not sure. With over 40 hours of giddy fun with friends already, I'm at $1 per hour at this point. Money well spent. This game brings similar feelings and draw like the Halo days long ago. I'm like a kid while playing this game.
