Bethesda announced that Fallout 4 is getting a fresh update to bring some new features, along with getting it Steam Deck Verified later in April.
On the blog post it mentions April 25th along with next-gen console updates us PC players will also see "widescreen and ultra-wide support, fixes to Creation Kit and a variety of quest updates". On top of that we're also getting "stability, mods and bug fixes" and "Fallout 4 will also be Steam Deck verified" (it's currently only rated Playable by Valve).
For a game that's over 8 years old this is really nice to see!
Free Creation Club items are also on the way in a new "Echoes of the Past" quest that sees you try to stop "The Enclave from spreading their dangerous ideology and gaining a foothold in the Commonwealth". They said that along with workshop items and the Enclave Colonel uniform they're also including some other previously released content:
- Enclave Weapon Skins
- Enclave Armor Skins
- Tesla Cannon
- Hellfire Power Armor
- X-02 Power Armor
- Heavy Incinerator
Skyrim actually got a similar update late last year, so I wouldn't be surprised if they lock down some options like they did for Skyrim on Steam Deck. Depends what exactly they mean by getting it Verified for Fallout 4.
You can buy Fallout 4 from:
It's also currently in a big Fanatical Fallout Bundle.
I assume none of these updates will come to the GOG version? The blog post said it will.
Hopefully this update doesn’t break everything like it did for Skyrim. I love that this game is getting QoL improvements and steam deck UI changes to get verified. It does run really well on Deck currently.
That's very nice of them indeed. If you're modding Bethesda games this is yet another case of the opposite of nice...
They recently updated Skyrim with some steam deck improvements in late 2023. It broke all of the modpacks I used for months, so if you are interested in playing modded fallout in the next few months, you might want to setup the mod pack now, and disable automatic updates until your mods are back up to date.Steam deck "updates"... things like Creation Club exists or just Bugthesda.
Be nice if they added fsr3 and dlss perhaps also with frame gen. Game can really benefit from that in areas where no matter how good your hardware is, the fps will just tank.
In that case it is more likely that one core being maxed out is limiting performance. Upscaling won't help with that.
On the other hand, the target audience of FO4 is mostly people who probably don't care about mods (the console crowd), and people who mod can always skip the update, so why not I guess. At least we're getting Steam Deck verification as a bonus.

Perhaps, but they can also implement frame gen, which I do believe modders have already done for them. At least for skyrim I guess. FrameGen bypasses CPU bottlenecks. Not ideal, but works quite well for Single Player games.
As for mod compatibility; often the break will be linked to Script Extender, so once that is patched (happens pretty fast normally), MOST mods will suddenly work again except those that modify the ESP/ESM tables extensively like say, major storyline mods.
