After two recent Preview releases of SteamOS for Steam Deck, Valve has now put out the latest Stable update for everyone with SteamOS 3.5.19 code-named "Grey Park Seagull".

If you were hoping that Valve would actually explain what the recent "stability and security improvements" were from the last two preview releases, you'll be left disappointed. Valve has not detailed what they've changed there as the release notes are just two lines:

  • Fixed an issue causing no sound output in games that open and close audio devices quickly like Super Blood Hockey.
  • Stability and security improvements.

Your guess is as good as mine on that second line; why are Valve being so vague do you think? It's great to see continued updates to the operating system, but giving us more info on what has actually changed would be helpful. Usually Valve are a lot more clear in their release notes.

But i guess we will have to be patient for that

They are being vague so as not to release information on the game they’re working on.

Obviously the security improvements is that Barney Calhoun now has an HEV suit and gravity gun.

Very unlikely. They already have FSYNC for quite a while. As far i know, there haven't been any testing between esync, ntsync and fsync yet, which are all made to address the same issue. NTsync isn't that revolutionary, it just aim to be officially merged into the kernel which i think fsync still haven't.

Anyone else have an issue where controllers - external and the Deck itself - no longer work at all in any game? In menus and steam it is fine and normal, but nothing registers in game. It was working fine within the last few weeks at most but when I picked it up and updated today it completely broke.

I’m not sure when the next LTS kernel will be released but that will likely be the next kernel upgrade for SteamOS. Waiting until the next LTS kernel will also give more time for testing the new NTSync subsystem and any other kernel changes that might benefit SteamOS.
FYI this is the first SteamOS update I've seen come through on Discover. Something to be aware of if you're like me and use your steamdeck primarily as a desktop machine and have some custom stuff that needs to be done between OS updates.

One issue drives me crazy: my Steam Deck doesn’t register my external screen when I dock it using the official dock. I get a "no signal" error. A workaround is to unplug power from the dock, plug the Deck in the dock and wait for the screen to be registered, than re-plug the power. We seem to be quite a lot of people with that issue. It’s quite annoying.

I've been having more and more issues with external displays as time goes on, recently I tried and failed to replug my monitor and deck before giving up, but not the dock and not in that order... maybe that will work. My non-official dock with my TV works just fine.
