VCMI, the cross-platform open source game engine for Heroes of Might and Magic III has another fresh release out and they've been working on hooking up gamepad support. Nice to see more classics get that little bit more accessible.

Version 1.5.0 highlights:

  • Added Portuguese (Brazilian) translation.
  • Added basic support for game controllers.
  • Added option to disable cheats in game.
  • Game will no longer run vcmiserver as a separate process on desktop systems.
  • Game will no longer show server error messages in game chat in release builds.
  • Implemented switchable artifact sets from HD Mod.

There's a lot more to it than just the above like many bug fixes, multiplayer improvements to make it feel better and more clear on what's happening and various upgrades to the UI. There's even improvements the AI, expanded modding support and much more in the full changelog.

Overall it looks nice a really great update.

You do need the original game for the data files which you can grab on GOG.com. Check out the official site and their GitHub.

Are the animations fixed in the new version? Last time I checked, they were too fast or too slow compared to the original.

Ha! My thoughts exactly. Not a major thing but it feels off.
