Developer Mike Blumenkrantz has another blog post up and Merge Request ready for Mesa, the set of open source graphics drivers, which gives a big boost to performance for Windows games with various videos.

As noted in the blog post the tests were done on BlazBlue Centralfiction, which has some issues. As Blumenkrantz noted it's a DirectX game, one which embeds video files. In Proton, GStreamer is used to play those videos while DXVK renders the game but GStreamer uses OpenGL and the performance was not great.

From the Mesa Merge Request that's only a few lines of changes it "massively improves (>100%) ReadPixels perf in a number of cases". Which should hopefully result in a smoother overall experience in games that do similar things with videos on Linux / Steam Deck with Mesa.

Seems like another nice win for open source driver performance, if it's merged into Mesa.

I guess Assassin's Creed Origins does the same, everytime I enter the skill tree menu, and I hover some skill to preview it, the framerate tanks when the preview starts playing, and returns to normal when I stop hovering.

Sadly, being on Nvidia means I won't be able to get this fix.
