ZOTAC Zone is yet another AMD gaming handheld

By -

Every hardware vendor seems to want a go at making a handheld, and now its ZOTAC jumping in with the Zone.

Teased during Computex it will come with an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U (Zen 4) and AMD Radeon 870M graphics (RDNA 3). It will also come with 2-stage adjustable triggers, hall effect joysticks and triggers, a 1920x1080 7" AMOLED multi-touch 120Hz display, a front-facing camera and even dual trackpads.

Zotac shared some images on X (formerly Twitter):

It looks pretty big. And of course, it will come with Windows. So if you want to run it on Linux, you'll need to wait for drivers to be worked on and for the likes of ChimeraOS and Bazzite to get support ready for it.

“Ever since the establishment of the ZOTAC GAMING brand, we have strived to provide an unmatched gaming experience for enthusiasts worldwide,” Said Tony Wong, Chief Executive Officer of ZOTAC. “We have made considerable efforts to raise the bar with our debut handheld, tailor-made with competitive features for all gamers.”

Valve well and truly lit a fire under everyone didn't they with the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED? Handheld PCs for gaming are now really becoming a bigger mainstream thing. We also had the silly-named MSI Claw 8 AI+ revealed recently too.

The ZOTAC Zone will launch in September priced reportedly around $800. So they're not even remotely trying to compete with the Steam Deck at that price. The price alone may be the biggest issue with it.

You can follow it on their store.

What I really do find amusing it's seeing the multiplication of Windoze handheld cannibalizing among themselves for a teeny-weeny market share. In the end, it might all lead them to drop the market because of insufficient sales numbers.

None of them come close to the unique and optimized experience that the Steam Deck offers. That's probably the main reason why these handhelds can't close the gap, in terms of sales. This and the price that doesn't make sense.

Valve really nailed it, this time.

Its a perfect time for Valve to make a steamdeckish desktop cube / steam machine with the new Apu's hitting the market. along with a new controller that mimic the layout of the steamdeck. i think it would hit off very well and linux is ready its interesting to see all these manufactures just throw windows on everything just to watch it shatter.

I mean.. who doesn't know this at this point? Why not just write "on X"?

Well, X could mean various other things, and the domain name is still twitter.com, and most people think calling it "X" was really stupid. So saying something like "X (formerly Twitter)" is kind of a way of saying "I don't care what that idiot changed the name to I'm going to use the name that's not ambiguous".
Seems to tick most the boxes except for price and that damn Windows install. I presume Microsoft basically gives them windows for free via OEM keys which is why we see all these companies using a non-handheld-friendly OS (windows).

It amazes me that these big companies have NOBODY in their department who can rebuilt up a compatible version of SteamOS or modify one of the free-respin steamos versions for their handheld. They could even slap their logo and name all over it, throw it up on github as a fork. BUT NO, they only have people educated in winblows! sad

Or just continue calling it Twitter. I have no idea what Musk was thinking rebranding it as something that sounds vaguely like a porn site.

When quickly skimming through text, I would need some help to decipher "X". Like "... on the social media platform X". But as others said: I also take the wording as sort of distancing.

Oh, apparently the outside ring housing for the sticks spins round as a jog control. That's pretty neat, actually.

Sheesh. Because of you I just spent five minutes reading about the Yellowstone supervolcano . . . probably for the second time.

The option to disable the Recall function is available in the Settings. And by rumors it's been available to select during the initial setup screen, at least in Europe.

Given microsoft's history with such things, one would need to be be truly naive to trust them to honour such a setting, both in spirit and its definition.

Even then, expect microsoft updates to mess with the setting.

people have been getting access to recall... and it's on by default.

It's a shame that it officially supports only Windows. I am still waiting for something like Steam Deck, but more lightweight (yet still powerful), more compact and more suitable for travelling. Not sure about this Zotac handheld, but I have already seen some Chinese ones that did look like something I wish for, sadly they all supported Windows, but not Linux. And although something like ChimeraOS would probably run fine on most of them, I want to be sure before I purchase one. I do not want another Linux computer that I have to take care of in case of hardware (or other) issues. I want a gaming handheld that works without issues (ideally all the time) and can be used to seamlessly play my favourite games on.
