Developer Unfrozen who previously made Iratus: Lord of the Dead have teamed up with Ubisoft, and they recently announced the new Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era. One for fans of the classics!

Unfrozen's previous game did have Native Linux support, but since they're now working with Ubisoft I fully expect it to need to run through Proton on Linux desktop and Steam Deck.

What's interesting here is that this is actually a prequel, and very much looks like a return to the roots of the gameplay.

More about it: "Heroes of Might & Magic Olden Era is a new installment of the renowed series of turn-based strategy games, where action takes place in Enroth, on the continent of Jadame, mentioned but never explored in a Heroes of Might & Magic game before. Traverse a vibrant and living fantasy world full of wonders and dangers, build magnificent capital cities, raise massive armies and clash in epic, highly tactical battles of heroes and mythical creatures.

Play solo with a new campaign, multiple single maps and limitless randomly generated scenarios, or engage in battle of wits and magic with other players — rivals or allies — in multiplayer mode. There is also an option to build your own story with the map editor tool, which you may make available to all the players around the world or keep to yourself."

I like that this looks more like a modernized version of the HoMM 3 style rather than the direction they went with HoMM 5 through 7.

I love HOMM*, but its way too time consuming for the adult version of myself. It would need some serious quick play options for me to consider it at all. I can't spend hours watching slow walking and combat animations anymore...

Will buy it for sure.

Well, that looks not bad actually. I'll keep hoping for now.

The art style is a bit of an eyesore, though.

They're planning shortish session multiplayer modes.

Damn I'm interested, gameplay looks more like a proper HOMM game than just another boring tactical RPG (like the later titles in the series did).

And in particular, graphically it looks really really good. The art style looks both evocative and readable, designs are neat and the "drawn" look is a good fit for the setting. The art manages to have the same atmosphere as the old games, without going for pixel art - and benefiting from the depth and multiple angles of view of 3d. Animations look good, models are just detailed enough to be cool even from a playable camera angle.
Do Ubisoft games still require you run uplay? The last one I played was Far Cry 3 and it was such a pain I just ended up running a pirate version that bypassed uplay instead.

So, as a guy rocking the black dragon around here, I feel like I should be excited...but truth be told I've never been more skeptical of anything else I feel like. For one, I get the impression this tries to evoke the nostalgia a tad bit too much. Just from the trailer I was able to make out buildings, units, map pickups and features like mountains that are definitely redrawn from their originals. It's obvious. Heroes 3 is perfectly playable today however and I don't think just Heroes 3 with different graphics is what I want and what we need.
If they try and change things up, well, then there's the fact that I've been enjoying Age of Wonders 4 a lot lately. I think the devs need to have some serious might and pull off actual magic to compete now since the franchise has been frozen and AoW4 specifically has shown the mastery and experience Triumph accumulated over the years.

Most of them do.
I've made the mistake of buying a game that requires it once 15 years ago. I am not going to do that again. Useless launcher, pos DRM, horrible software and no support. I ended up having to roll back my windows installation. For all I care the people responsible for it can get struck by lightning while on the loo...

Looks very good and I wish them luck. Played their previous game and it was ok. Will not buy, though, because of Ubisoft.
