Valve updated Proton Experimental to finish up July with some game fixes, as a little treat. So you can play even more games on Steam Deck and Desktop Linux thanks to their work.

The July 31st update brings all these fixes:

  • Fixed connecting with Unreal Insights to games running under Proton.
  • Fixed video playback in Spirit Hunter: NG.
  • Fixed "Customize Setup" not working during EA Launcher installation.
  • Fixed The Finals not being playable after a recent game update.
  • Fixed font rendering in Shady Brook - A Dark Mystery Text Adventure.
  • Fixed a crash in Starfield: Creation Kit.
  • Fixed video quality of live streamed episodes in Quantum Break.
  • Fixed artifacts in Yakuza 4 Remastered opening video.
  • Fixed Proton Experimental regression that caused Mafia II to crash on launch.
  • Fixed 9.0 regressions:
    • Controllers work again in Sonic Forces.
    • GRID Autosport and GRID 2 are playable again.

Additionally this release pulled in updates from vkd3d-shader to make these games now playable too:

  • Metal Slug
  • Zombie Gunship Survival
  • Gods Will Be Watching
  • The Last Blade

All the details can be seen in the changelog.

It will show up as an update in your Steam Downloads for Proton Experimental if you already have it downloaded. See more in my Steam Play Proton guide.

Fixes for EA launcher very important because that (and other useless launchers) are often the only problem getting a game going also on other operating systems. Why can't we just get rid of these additional launcher launchers....

The Finals is an odd one. Anti-cheat breaks every other update, yet Valve is able to patch it every time without the developers. If the anti-cheat isn't configured correctly, it wouldn't even run under Linux. I do wonder what the actual issue is. Maybe the build process configures stuff slightly differently every single time or something.
How many times did they now fixed the EA App? It feels like every new Proton version list this fix again.
At this point it becomes the Herobrine from Minecaft. :D

It's that cat and mouse game that never ends because for every new update that EA does to their crappy launcher, it breaks Proton. Once Proton fixes it, it'll break again later on and the cycle continues.

No Once Human fixes
Is anyone able to get Starfield running? It crashes on loading a game ever since the Creation Kit update. This happens on both my Steam Deck as well as my main PC. Hell, on my main PC, it sometimes borks the entire Wayland session and a restart is usually necessary (I was able to recover it once). This is on Arch Linux with the latest version of KDE Plasma.
