The Wine team have just release vkd3d version 1.13, an update for their own Direct3D to Vulkan translation library.

The noted highlights:

  • Basic loop unrolling support in the HLSL compiler.
  • Effects compiler support for several version 4.0+ state objects.
  • Miscellaneous bug fixes.

That's just the main standout changes, there's lots of smaller changes too as they build it up. This will be bundled with the next release of Wine which will be Wine 9.17 which should be due out around the 6th of September.

All that's new can be seen in the release post.

Not to be confused with Valve's VKD3D-Proton which was forked off from it a long time ago now. As explained before on this: Valve want things ready a lot faster, and with dedicated support for all the latest games in Proton. Valve are a lot more aggressive on getting all the newest possible stuff inside VKD3D-Proton. Meanwhile Wine directly has a much wider software target, including various applications (not just games).

One of the biggest areas of weakness for VKD3D is Ray/Path Tracing performance it seems, in particular translating with D3D12 which I believe is pretty much the only API other then Vulkan that does RT/PT for games?

Someone was doing some tests on YT recently and noticed the huge performance issue with RT/PT under Linux with translation layer, almost %50 less fps.
