Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered are real and they're coming to PC on December 10, with Aspyr Media once again taking control of updating older games.

Much like Aspyr did with STAR WARS: Bounty Hunter, STAR WARS: Battlefront Classic Collection and Tomb Raider I-III Remastered. While no doubt the awful release of the Battlefront Classic Collection is still in some peoples minds, this is a single-player game, so no server-issue problems (and their other two releases are positively reviewed).

Aspyr said they were able to get the full source code from Crystal Dynamics so they have the basis for all the "exact same combat, puzzles, and boss fights, with the same balance and feel, as the original" - so it should be pretty difficult to mess this one up.

What can we actually expect from it then? Updated controls and camera controls, updated graphics, there's now a map and compass to assist your travels, a photo mode, real-time shadows, a day and night cycle (that was cut from the original release), a graphics toggle between new and old and more.

Unless Aspyr do something weird it should work fine in Valve's Proton on Steam Deck and Desktop Linux.

The original is a game I have always wanted to play and never did. This could be a good opportunity to get a GILF
This is one of those games I'd play the demo over and over on ps1 but never actually owned.. might have to actually play through the full game now

Though to me the remastered graphics look a little too bright

Great, now they're gonna do something weird...

I too have never played the original, even though I own the game on GOG. I see it getting praised so often, so maybe I really should take a look at it some time.

edit: Typo

I don't remember Soul Reaver 2 since I was out of the loop in gaming by the time it got released on PS2 but I do have fond memories of Soul Reaver 1 despite not finishing it. I do wonder if delisting Soul Reaver 1 on PC meant that they'll include it in the remastered version as a bonus game.

As for the remastered versions, it looks fine but some of the character models and environments don't pop out in a way that it was redone from scratch but rather just cleaning it up to make it pretty instead of it being more modernized.

I am really excited about this one. Raziel looks a bit too blue-ish in my opinion, I really like the colors in SR2, but other than that it looks like a great remaster. I expect the same quality as the TR Remaster with this one, so the graphics are going to be nice. Let's hope the new controls are a bit better tho. SR2 controls like dogshit, especially during fights.

For those who dont know. There's also a remaster fan project of the first game that uses the Dreamcast version of the game with HD textures. It can be played on Linux with the Flycast emulator. More info HERE.

from the thumbnail of the article, i would say:
the so called remake is just an stupid take on the original art direction...

i never played this game, and probably should, but... the mainstream game industry dont seem to deserve my money, they could just re relase the game and focus on new ideas instead, this seems stupid.

I played a demo of Soul Reaver 1 on the PS1 long ago back in 1998. I remember the game being dark and confusing.
Generally not a huge fan of remasters, but this is one exception I'll make. The LoK games were a big part of my childhood.

I don't know many games today that can put out such a great story and that voice acting.
