My favourite auto-battler Mechabellum is out now

Bringing together the explosive destruction from real-time strategy games to the auto-battler genre, Mechabellum is a thoroughly good time and it's out now. Disclosure: my key was originally sent by TriplePoint PR.

After being in Early Access for over a year the 1.0 release brings with it a new seasonal system, a new ranking system, new commander specialists to pick before the battle starts, optimizations and more. The game works great on Linux with Valve's Proton.

While auto-battlers seemed like at one point they would be all the rage with Dota Underlords, Auto Chess and many other attempts they reasonably quickly died off like a bit of a fad. Mechabellum is different though, at least to me, because of just how exciting and ridiculously explosive the action is once it gets going. It feels a lot more strategic than other games in the genre and it's just damn fun to play.

With it being an auto-battler, you don't do anything while the fight is actually happening except sit back and watch the fireworks. Games are based on short rounds, and once you destroy all the enemy units what units you have left are counted up and their power is then used to take down the enemy's total health until one side hits zero. The strategy here is in what units you place down, where you place them and what upgrades and bonuses you pick as the rounds progress. It gets really engrossing and constantly gives me that need of just having one more game before I've ended up spending a good 2-3 hours round after round.

I just love seeing the big units stomp all over the little ones, or seeing big units get absolutely swarmed by lots of little ones. There's so many combinations you can use.

Battles are quick to get into and don't take much time at all to complete, so you can happily play it when you have time to spare and when you're in somewhat of a hurry during a coffee break. It's a great in-between game for people who love strategy games, but don't have hours to spend.

I've put a good bunch of hours into it and there's simply never a boring moment. Worth grabbing for sure.
