It's hard to pull me away from Bloons TD 6, but Terrorformer TD has managed to do it. A tower defense game where you constantly tweak the battlefield as time goes on. Note: key provided by ÜberStrategist.

The key here is in the name: terraforming. The maps are tile-based, with most tiles allowing you to move them up to block paths or down to open them up. This allows you to push enemies from spawners into a specific direction you have covered. Not just that, you can move terrain tiles up from underneath your towers too to give them a nice big buff. This one feature really does make it feel unique and really interesting to play through.

What's also different here is that you can seal enemy spawners permanently shut. Each time you seal all that are currently on the map, the map then grows with new spawners appearing. So everything about the game layout keeps changing the longer you play so it's incredibly dynamic. As time goes on enemies will get larger in number, and stronger too, so it's not just the map changes you need to keep thinking on but your own strategy on how to deal with them all.

Since it's a tower defense game, you have one main home tower to defend with limited health. This tower is customizable too, eventually when you unlock more anyway, so you can have a different type of home tower depending on how you wish to play.

Each round you succeed you get given a certain amount of resources across gold to buy towers and upgrade, map points to terraform and seal spawners, mana to cast spells and more. After each round you then get to spend all these resources to unlock new towers, upgrade towers, exchange one resource for another and more.

With a large number of towers with various strengths and weaknesses, each being able to individually level-up and be moved around tiles whenever you want, there's really a lot here to keep you interested to just have that one more run. Plenty of randomization here too with your available unlocks, upgrades, and a map erosion that's different each time.

I tried this one as a demo, and it got repetitive fast. The optimal strategy is to build a wall of turrets asap, an as turrets can't be moved by environmental disasters, the fully counters the game's standout feature. Eventually, waves become a slow slog, with certain bosses only going down when pausing the game and spamming a few thousand spells to hit at a single point (some enemies have insane healing)
Why are devs calling tower defense games "roguelite" now? I have seen that on several recent releases. How is it different from more general tower defense?
