PAX Aus have announced their 2024 line-up and it's absolutely packed with big names. Curiously, even Valve for Steam will be attending.
The line-up of exhibitors was revealed yesterday, September 17th, in an official post on the PAX Aus website. It notes that some big brands and companies will be there including Bethesda Softworks ANZ, Blizzard Entertainment, Devolver, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, PC Game Pass, Playside Studios, SEGA, Steam, The Sims, and Ubisoft.
Quite exciting to see Steam listed with the event organisers noting "While on the topic of love, PAX Aus welcomes Steam for the first time ever. More on that when the show opens, you’re not going to want to miss it!"
Sounds interesting and they're clearly being a little coy. Pointing perhaps to something exciting coming, and a gaming event would be a good place to announce anything for a company like Valve.
Perhaps then, Australia might finally see a proper Steam Deck release? Even though it's not officially available, that hasn't stopped plenty of stores in Australia letting people buy it via importing it which many people have done so. However, getting it done officially would be awesome for the continued success of Valve's hardware.
Although, it might not be Steam Deck related, who knows, they might even use the time for an official Deadlock launch into a more open Beta without needing invites. Time to keep expectations in check huh?

I don't know about you, but I feel far less confident in repairs that need to be shipped over long distances.. Fedex, UPS, DHL, TNT; none of the transport services are actually dedicated to quality transport. You only need 1 poorly run hub or driver to damage your device. You may be a former project manager, but I've been working in a warehouse for 11 years now. I see the level of care these people put into their work on a daily basis. International shipping reliability is spotty.
DHL can't even be bothered to deliver to us within normal business hours, and I'm in a major metropolitan area.

Yeah, it is at the moment. And on that note, the Steam Deck is an excellent emulation-box on top of all of its other merits, so hopefully Australians can finally get their hands on it soon!

Not really, I'd actually just be super happy that the Steam Deck 2 exists at all, even in this magical fantasy worst case scenario where we get a SD2 release in Australia first I'd be more than happy to wait however long it takes for the SD2 to come to the states.
...Assuming it has the same control scheme as SD1, that is. I'm extremely worried that Valve is going to remove things because certain people think they don't need the touchpads and 4 grip triggers while I can't go back to not having those on a controller.

I don't think there's much risk of that. Valve did loads of ergonomics testing for the design of the Deck, and their objective is to comfortably control every PC game even when the game dev hasn't put in any controller support. They aren't going to be swayed from that approach by random ranters on Reddit, nor by other manufacturers just throwing a Microsoft layout and a Microsoft OS on their handheld and calling it a day.
Stealing good ideas, like Hall Effect hardware or extra controls on the rings of the sticks, is feasible - they've already done that by lifting things from the mod community and integrating them into the OOTB experience.

A perfect controller to me is just the steam deck as is with no screen or computer included, hall effect joysticks, and they add the HD Rumble/Haptic Trigger effects from a DualSense. Additionally they make the 4 grip triggers easier to press without adding rubber extender addons.
This way, all the steam input profiles that get made with a Steam Deck, can just transfer with ease over to docked mode.
