Things are not going exactly well for Ubisoft right now, and so they continue returning to Steam with Assassin's Creed Mirage released today. This follows on from its release a year ago where it was only available via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect.

If you missed the news recently Ubisoft are moving back to same-day releases on Steam! We have Star Wars Outlaws to come in November, and Assassin's Creed Shadows later since it was delayed.

As usual though it does use Denuvo with a machine activation limit, so if you're playing on Linux Desktop / Steam Deck, you'll want to be careful on switching around Proton versions for it otherwise you'll get locked out for 24 hours. On top of that it also uses the Ubisoft Connect Launcher, which at times had some issues in Proton but it should work mostly fine.

As for Steam Deck compatibility? No official Valve rating yet but Ubisoft stated in a news post it will get a "Playable" rating soon with an update planned:

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is playable on Steam Deck. While it is currently displayed in the “Unknown category”, the “Playable” Steam Deck label will be coming in the next few weeks through a new update.
This next update will allow to launch the game on Steam Deck with low settings by default to best optimize the experience.
Note that applying higher settings may impact the experience and lead to instability when playing on Steam Deck.

It's 50% off on Steam until October 24th.

Bought immediately yesterday night (also because of the 50% discount). I have played the tutorial part and it looks alright. What surprised me the most was how all the things have progressed in the last 7 years:
  • Origins wasn't performing that great at launch.
  • Odyssey was alright but it had plenty of crashes and stuttering issues.
  • Valhalla was a DX12 only game and it came at that time that vkd3d-proton was under development and tuning, and there where some manual adjustements to do in order to make it work.
Now Mirage works out of the box. I can't say I'm not impressed about all the way we have been making so far.

Not interested but it's funny to see how it only took a little bit bankruptcy for the suits at Ubisoft to decide to go back to Steam.

Do you realize the game was originally released on pc more than a year ago, right?

Might buy it to play on the Steam Deck. Seems to run great from what I have read. Stable 45 fps with medium settings. The game itself looks like it's going back to the series stealth game play roots which suits me.

Now they just need to understand that denuvo and superfluous client annoy people and lower the sales, and they're back on track.
"Incorporates 3rd-party DRM: Denuvo Anti-tamper 5 a day machine activation limit"

"Requires 3rd-Party Account: Ubisoft Connect Launcher (Supports Linking to Steam Account)"

Swing and a miss, still not getting my money Ubisoft.

No Steam release means no PC release

Seriously, by reading the reports at that time, just minor issues were reported on vkd3d-proton concerning Mirage. It was not the mess of a brand new architecture like at the time of Valhalla.

Shockingly it turns out, its not the best business strategy to make it harder for customers to buy and use your products

Now lets hope Ubi realises the "use" part of this equasion too by finally getting rid of their launcher and any forced-online crap etc...

I still like their games, but somehow they don´t seem to like my money

Yeah. Got burrned by Denuvo a couple of times. My new stance is to wait for an update where they remove it. It will just perform better, overall. I should have done that with Star Wars Jedi Survivor. That game's Denuvo integration was a great example of what not to do!

AFAIK Ubisoft never removes Denuvo from their games unlike most other developers.

I am comfortable with not buying Ubi games.

Just because you are bankrupt, cash strapped and crawled back to steam does not mean I am going to rent games from you, especially after what you did with the crew game and games still infested with DRM and Ubi Account linking still required.

Bye Bye Ubisoft.

Good to know. They'll never get my money, then.

I'd be willing to try Ubi games again if they ditched the launcher and Denuvo. They won't, but that's okay. Saves me some money.

Sure it's going well for them: Denuvo even on small, cheap, old indie titles like Scott Pilgrim vs The World (so they don't lose a penny from piracy) and no unfair Steam cut, so they must be doing piles of money!

What? They are almost bankrupt? Unimaginable!

Inconceivable!
I know it's supposed to look inspiring, but I can't help seeing the guy in the thumbnail of the launch trailer as doing an A-pose.

That's the most important aspect actually.

Without proper work conditions for the employees whatever comes out of that business is bound to be lacking both in quality and creativity.
