Kvark is a new release from developer Latest Past and publisher Perun Creative, set in a fictional version of the 80s Czech Republic where you explore a top-secret uranium mine. Note: my key was provided by PR Outreach.

The 1.0 release is out now, which comes with a Native Linux version after a year in Early Access. What is it? A retro-inspired FPS that pays homage to such games as Half-Life and BioShock. You can definitely tell, as it wears the inspiration on its sleeve. If you love retro inspired shooters, you're in for a bit of a treat on this one.

Features:

  • Fast-paced fights with a plethora of weapons, from wrenches to grenades, bazookas, and the iconic EK-48.
  • Uniquely designed, diverse, and challenging enemies that require swift tactics and weapon swapping, quick thinking, and constant movement.
  • An intriguing story told through hidden notepads that the player must find to reveal.
  • Search for suspicious substances that may help you with your efforts.
  • Simple to intricate puzzles that the player will have to solve to progress.
  • Detailed, interactive levels that reward players willing to explore with hidden Easter eggs, secrets, and achievements.
  • Stylized retro graphics that bring old-school gaming nostalgia.
  • A strong “just-one-more-level” vibe and loads of explosive fun!

With the Native Linux version that was tested, two prominent bugs were found in the 1.0 release:

  • Videos don't play and instead you get a white screen (the developer is aware).
  • In my case when pressing ESC to go to the menu, I was unable to exit the menu again unless I loaded the last save. That's quite game-breaking as you'll lose progress.

Based on those issues, I would recommend just playing it with Valve's Proton where those issues don't exist after testing with Proton 9.0-3. However, with Proton the Unreal Engine it uses brings up an additional step to install some bits it needs so you'll have to wait a minute or two for it to appear.

You can buy it on Steam.

Took the video issue for granted and finished it on the Native Linux version. Game was just plain fun. Strangely enough, episode 3 had one level less than the other episodes.

Oooooh, another game set in Czechia? Gonna be an insta-buy when it's on sale.
Any chance of a GOG release?
