Giving off some early Untitled Goose Game vibes, Goeland is a non-linear open-world adventure where you're one of the most annoying birds on the planet - the seagull. You can tell I live near the sea right?

Created by indie dev Bryan Martinet, you play as a mischievous seagull in a small sandboxy open world, interacting with characters and environment to solve enigmas, achieve quirky goals or take on self-imposed challenges and of course — poop on everyone.

In an email Martinet mentioned: "Earlier this year, I lost my job in the AAA game industry (Eidos Montréal) due to the waves of layoffs hitting the industry. I took it as an opportunity to create this game on my own. It’s been a challenging yet rewarding experience, handling every aspect of game development."

Seems like a fun idea! After playing a bunch of the demo I'm looking forward to seeing what other chaotic things the developer adds in. Being able to fly around and having a lot of freedom to explore will be great. The demo area is of course limited, but this small slice is promising.

Features:

  • Play as a mischievous seagull wreaking havoc on a quiet island.
  • Engage in open-ended, sandbox-style gameplay.
  • Solve puzzles and complete objectives using stealth, creativity, manipulation.
  • Interact with various items and NPCs to cause chaos and amusement.
  • Shape and transform your surroundings based on your actions.
  • Help adorable stranded animals find their way to the ocean.
  • Enjoy charming visuals and a delightful, whimsical and dynamic soundtrack.
  • Experience dynamic reactions from the environment and characters.
  • Explore multiple areas within the island, each with its own unique challenges.
  • Interact with charming characters and assist them in their quests.
  • Enjoy relaxing gameplay with no time limits or pressure.

The demo has a Native Linux version that works great. Have a look and try the demo on Steam now. The full game release date has not yet been announced.

What a nice plot twist for those(including me) living in places where Seagulls are jerks.

Waiting for the Pringles+Laxatives DLC....

The Magpie being the dealer is also pretty funny

You might - or might totally not - enjoy "Just Crow Things", where a can of beans can make you fly faster. Due to reasons. Recoil principle, ya know.

Quoteone of the most annoying birds on the planet - the seagull. You can tell I live near the sea right?

Having moved from Johannesburg to Brighton, I can attest that the Hadeda Ibis is significantly louder and far more obnoxious. They, however, love worms, so little wars between them and the chickens over whom gets worm-plucking rights was far more of a thing than them stealing our food.

The Heron Seagull's we have here in Brighton tries to steal our food when we're at the beach , but just a mile inland they are far more tame.

On day 2 of living in Brighton, a Magpie stole my key... I've learnt to keep those out of sight.

Man, I miss those chickens. They would listen to any amount of whining about how unfair society is as long as you have some treats. And they also give you fresh tasty eggs.
It was impressive watching the seagull who stole my wife's donut hastily swallowing it whole to stop the other seagulls from getting it. Which seems kind of jerky given that they'd been acting as a distraction while it did a steep dive from behind.

Also, and just because, here's the song Lesbian Seagull, and a story about it too.
