I adored FTL: Faster Than Light and Red Rogue Sea looks like a sweet evolution of the gameplay with pirates and deck-building. Announced yesterday by Firemage Studios this is one to stick on your watch list for sure, I can easily see myself spending hours and hours in this one.

"Red Rogue Sea is a roguelike strategy game that puts you in the shoes of a pirate captain and their crew. You will manage your vessel as you sail through the treacherous waters of the archipelago, interacting with the scum that inhabits it. Make decisions that impact the outcome of various events and the overall narrative."

You can follow it on Steam - it releases sometime in Spring 2025. Going by the Steam page it will have Linux support too.

Hmmm . . . I wonder about the card thing in nautical combat. I'm not sure I want my tactical options restricted by what cards I pull. It feels weird. Like, I can't maneuver unless I draw a card that says I can, seems kind of immersion-breaking.

Mind you, I don't think I've ever seen a nautical game where I thought the combat had that, you know, Horatio Hornblower/Master and Commander feel that I was looking for. So maybe I'm just picky.
I'm kind of in the same boat, no pun intended. I adored FTL for the freedom it gave you in combat. I'm not sure I would've enjoyed it as much if combat had involved deck building. Don't get me wrong, I also love Slay the Spire so it's not like I dislike deck-based combat in general, it's just that FTL had that incredible tactical freedom to pursue so many different options depending on your loadout.

That said the trailer's short enough that I didn't get much of an idea of what gameplay would be like, so I'll reserve judgement for now and see how it plays closer to release.
