My most anticipated game of the year keeps running away from me. Streets of Rogue 2 is no longer entering Early Access on October 22nd, but at least a demo is out now.
Writing in a post on Steam the developer said:
So first off, why the delays? Well, the TL;DR is “Big Open-Ended Game + Solo Programmer = Unpredictable Timeline.” October 22 seemed like a viable date back in July, but ultimately despite my best efforts, I felt the game needed a bit more time in the oven. My sincere apologies for the delays, I fully understand how annoying it can be to look forward to something only to have the rug pulled. That’s why we won’t be announcing any more specific dates until it’s a 100% lock.
There's no specific date being given now but it will be in the "near future", so I imagine still this year.
Good news though — you can play the demo right now on Steam for Steam Next Fest. Although the demo only has a Windows version, I've checked and it works with Proton 9.0-3. If you don't know how to use Proton see my guide.
With the demo the developer mentioned it's now close to the EA release with a solid foundation, but it needs a lot more polish to "bring the core game loop and progression system to where they need to be, and bugs are still a little too prevalent" so it's still a bit rough.
The addition of vehicles is great! At one point I was driving along taking a shortcut, where thought I could make it over this little pond. Clearly I wasn't paying enough attention, as I drove into a bunch of chickens who shortly after descended on the vehicle and blew it up. Those are some powerful chickens.
I've also been mauled by a bear, I chased someone into a road because I wanted their gun and a car nicely finished them off for me, gave blood for money, raided many trashcans and at one point caused a riot so big it levelled most of the initial starter city — woops.
Even with my short time in it so far, I've already done and seen some truly hilarious things. I really enjoyed the first game, and just wanted more of it in a bigger setting and it seems Streets of Rogue 2 may very well deliver on that.
Check it out on the Steam page.
