Valve did a bit of a woops here, as they recently accidentally leaked the designs for what looks like their upcoming Steam Controller 2 and a new VR controller that is likely to come with the long leaked Deckard VR headset.

This is all speculation as always from leaks, as what we've seen might not even get released. As we saw from the Steam Deck, Valve go through a lot of iterations on their hardware before release.

Spotted by SteamDB developer Pavel Djundik on Bluesky, the newer Steam Controller 2 looks like everything I wanted. Here's a slightly upscaled version of what they found for what's code-named Ibex.

Looks rather nice, and I'm really happy to see dual thumbsticks and thumbpads, much more like the Steam Deck. Clearly Valve have taken notes about how much people love the inputs on the Steam Deck. My only concern there is how thick it looks, so it will be very interesting to eventually get my hands on it to see how it feels.

According to Djundik on Bluesky, here's how the leak happened:

The way it leaked is funny, [they] put "freetodownload" on the SteamVR app for anonymous accounts to access, which made all the depots accessible, and one of the depots was the contents for deckard/roy.

What do you think? Will you buy one?

I hope we get (at least) 4 back buttons like on the Steam Deck, one of my favorite feature.

I hope this is real. I shelved my SC when I realised that most of the games I use a controller for inevitably used two thumbsticks and the pad stand-in for that missing right stick just didn't work well.

This is an insta-buy if it's as good as the original SC but ALSO has that crucial second thumbstick.

As a Steam Deck enthusiast - this is The Awaited Real Thing for the desktop

I hope this is real.

It sure looks like it. Only without the branding and other text. Do only Valve possess the most variety gaming observing realists within their ranks? Those touchpads are 100% must to game accurately enough via these gamepads.

Neat! Though as someone with short thumbs I hope it isn't too wide given the joysticks are apparently in the middle of the device.

Recently I just bought a Razer Wolverine V2 and... steam doesn't detect it as xbox gamepad and the games such Hollow Knight doesn't works well, the triggers aren't "precise"...

And now this new steam controller... and it's beautiful... I hope it's true. I will buy it and ditch the Razer one :)

As a person with massive elongated fingers and hands which are mirror images of each other, I love both how chunky it looks and it being symmetric. If it shows up on the store tomorrow I'll buy two.

There has no doubt been a compromise to get all the inputs on the controller but I trust that they did enough testing on it.
I doubt they would release something like that if it weren't comfortable for at least 95% of testers. So even if the sticks look quite far away, it's probably going to be fine.

So excited for this. I might've considered the Hori controller when they sell them in Europe (assuming) but now I will wait for whenever this comes out. This has been enough confirmation of its existence for me.

Interested how it would feel in the hands look a tad awkward with the touch pads

I've been using ps4 controllers lately as my go-to for linux, it seems to work better on alot of random linux ports I try compared to xbox controllers so I wonder how this would stack up with it being xinput I would assume the same as an xbox controller

The sonic mania decomp, for example, doesn't recognise my xbox controllers unless I add as a non-steam game, but the ps4 controllers work regardless which is why personally I've been opting for ps4 pads

I will definitely buy one if it is real. If it isn't real, I'll buy one in my dreams.

I am planning to get it as a replacement for my Xbox Series X/S gamepad that I am not happy with. (I won't go into details why I am not happy with it, otherwise this will turn into a long rant.)

Could be really good. At first glance I feel like the sticks are in a really awkward spot, but I imagine in reality they're in almost the exact same spot as the dualsense controller, there are just touch pads where the dualsense has open space.

Probably an improvement, the touchpad on the dualsense isn't really useful except when navigating menus completely outside of anything like a game.

Personally, I would like smaller touchpads, since I move my thumb very little while playing on the Steam Controller.

But beggars can't be choosers, so I accept this as it is.

Just increase distribution channels Valve, because I paid a arm and a leg trough Amazon to get the original SC while outside the US.

I don't buy that these leaks are "accidental" I mean show me one thing by Valve which didn't leaked. If I remember correctly even the Steam Deck "leaked" before and there where speculation about new Steam Controllers or a new Steam Machine as well. Correct me if I am wrong please.

I guess if someone know than it is Liam

Looks good to me, if only reminiscent of the "The Duke" Xbox controller :)

Hey, my hands are also mirror images of each other! What are the odds?

I pass: the trackpads do not have prime real estate where your thumbs will naturally rest on the controller. Since this isn't a trackpad-centric controller, I'll just stick to my original Steam Controllers. They're my favorite controllers and the best choice for PC gaming with the exception of fighting games and twin stick shooters.

Why do you rest your fingers anywhere? I have mine on the sticks or the buttons the whole time.
sarmad Nov 27, 2024
I will definitely buy one.
johnny-linux Nov 27, 2024
Looks perfect! Yes I will buy one. Hoping it comes in less than $100. Paying $200 for a dual sense edge to get decent trackpad/paddles is so overpriced.

Right, he wants his thumbs on the track pads the whole time. Would be awesome if they let you swap everything around like the Thustmaster controller.
