There seems to be no end to games that will suck away all of my free time and now that Vampire Hunters is out now, it's also going into my regular rotation to blow off some steam. Note: key originally provided for me.

I actually took a look at this originally in a video for the Steam Deck well over a year ago. Back then though, it was a corridor-shooter where you just ran forwards blasting everything in your path. A good basic idea, but the gameplay just wasn't quite there. It was just too flat with it being a constant forwards runner. Now though? It's much more like Vampire Survivors in 3D as an FPS, with proper open levels to run around in — and that's great.

Here you run around shooting everything that comes you way, pick up experience orbs and when you level up you can pick up to 14 weapons to stack together to turn yourself into a one-person annihilation machine. There's various character buffs to choose, weapon upgrades as well and it just becomes pure and total chaos.

For players who like customization and progression there's plenty of that too. With multiple characters to choose from each with strengths and weaknesses, plus you can change starting equipment for each of them too. Outside of that as you progress more through the game, you will end up unlocking more and more to use during your next run. Then there's also character skill trees and permanent upgrades as well. Lots to keep you interested in playing more of it.

Since it's pretty over the top in both enemy numbers, and your screen filling up with weapons, it's nice to see there's a few accessibility options to help. You can play it like a proper FPS for starters, but by default weapons will auto-fire, so all you have to do is aim. You can also change the enemy outline that shows behind walls and objects to help you see them between a few different styles and colours - nice.

Plus, since you get a lot of weapons, you can also choose to have them combined down to one side, or both sides, to give you more room to focus. Which you'll probably need, because it's actually quite challenging once it gets going and you've got tons of enemies lining up from all directions.

Feature Highlight:

  • Stack Your Arsenal: Create mind-blowing builds by combining firearms, relics, artifacts, and character abilities.
  • Slay Thousands: Battle against waves of vampires, demons, and other supernatural creatures.
  • Fire At Will: Experience true control by switching between automatic and manual firing modes, giving you precise command over your arsenal.
  • Unique Character Abilities: Each hunter has distinct playstyles and skill trees to customize your approach.
  • Infinite Mayhem: Enjoy an engaging mix of old-school FPS action and roguelite gameplay, with an average playtime of around 20 hours and infinite replayability.
  • Absurd, Cheesy, and Fun: Experience a lighthearted tone with exciting electronic disco vibes that make every session a blast!

If you love the basic idea of Vampire Survivors to repeat runs, and create some utterly ridiculous character builds but prefer first-person shooters then this is absolutely for you. The shooting and destruction feels quite satisfying when you've got a nice stacked build of weapons.

On Steam Deck, I would suggest you drop it down to the Medium preset, otherwise later in the runs it may chug a little. But on medium it seemed to hold 45FPS quite nicely. Valve gave it the green Steam Deck Verified tick too. Naturally on desktop with even a slightly more powerful system it runs as well as you would expect it to.
