A game I had honestly never heard of because I live under a rock. A cult classic RPG named OFF is getting a Steam release next year. It was originally released in 2008 from Belgian developer Mortis Ghost, who has now teamed up with Fangamer for the updated version.

Why is this one important? Well, despite never having a proper store page anywhere as it was distributed across various direct-downloads, it managed to amass quite a following. It's had millions of downloads and was even cited multiple times by UNDERTALE's own Toby Fox as an inspiration for his designs.

The press email notes "This definitive version features an all-new battle system, balancing improvements, as well as new areas and hidden bosses from the game’s creator, Mortis Ghost. The surreal indie RPG, originally released in French, has now also received an OFFicial English translation."

More about it:

Take control of the Batter as he seeks to purify an uncanny and hopeless world haunted by specters, guided by a cryptic, grinning cat called The Judge.

As they move the Batter through increasingly confused zones—a farm that extracts metal from the inside of cattle, an amusement park full of people too frightened to enjoy themselves, a sugar factory with ominous smokestacks—players must reckon with The Batter’s mission themselves.

Fangamer aren't just publishing though, they're directly involved in the development too. As co-founder Ryan Alyea said in the press email:

Fangamer has published physical editions of indie games for a while now, but OFF is the first time we’ve moved into the development side for Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Lots of us here love the game; for a long time the English fan translation was actually distributed on a forum post on Starmen.Net, the EarthBound fansite started by many of us in 1998.

Moving a game that began as a freeware RPG Maker 2003 title to modern platforms wasn’t easy, but it felt like a perfect project for us.

It’s a great game, and it’s very rewarding to be able to help build something that’s exciting for old fans and accessible to players who might not have found OFF otherwise.

Features:

  • Uncover the secrets of an uncanny world and command a being known as The Batter.
  • Crush the specters with the help of an all-new battlesystem.
  • Find a rollercoaster too scary to ride, a library terrorized by a page thief, a mall that you cannot escape.
  • The new version of OFF features all-new areas and bosses designed by the game’s creator Mortis Ghost.
  • Purify the Queen’s Zones so her citizens can get back to work.

Oh, I remember that. Haven't played, but it always used to get mentioned alongside stuff like Ib (which I have played) or Barkley Shut Up and Jam. Nice to see it's got a new lease on life.
