After NVIDIA previously released a Beta script to setup GeForce NOW on Steam Deck, they're about to make it a whole lot better with a proper native app for full Steam Deck support.

NVIDIA said: "The streaming experience with GeForce NOW looks stunning, whichever way Steam Deck users want to play — whether that’s in handheld mode for HDR-quality graphics, connected to a monitor for up to 1440p 120 fps HDR or hooked up to a TV for big-screen streaming at up to 4K 60 HDR. GeForce NOW members can take advantage of RTX ON with the Steam Deck for photorealistic gameplay on supported titles, as well as HDR10 and SDR10 when connected to a compatible display for richer, more accurate color gradients."

Hopefully this won't be limited to the Steam Deck specifically. Making a native app means Linux, so unless they have something directly in the app that checks directly for a Steam Deck, it should work on desktop Linux too. And with more SteamOS devices coming, it's likely in preparation for that too as NVIDIA want in.

No date has been given other than later this year.

Neat, I've got a Raspberry Pi as a Christmas gift and was thinking about turning it into cloud gaming device for my TV 😄

I hope the app will be available on Flathub.

Ah, interesting, I wonder whether they will publish it on Flathub or on Steam (or possibly elsewhere).

The fact that they mention HDR is also interesting. As far as I know, only Wayland is capable of it. And then, only some Wayland compositor implement the (WIP) Wayland protocols, including Gamescope. Therefore this hints that they are aiming to get their app launched in "Gaming mode". As opposed to desktop mode (unless they are privy to some future SteamOS updates). And it may not be extremely compatible cross-distribution.

Luckily, last time I had a look, the HDR protocols seemed to have matured quite well, so hopefully this will lead to widespread compatibility.

That app doesn't work if you're authenticating with Gmail to login to your GeForce NOW account. I've tried it before when attempting to login with a Gmail account and it fails because Google blocked services that use Electron. With Nvidia making a native app for SteamOS (and maybe Linux), it should work the same way as the clients on Windows and macOS, which is a great thing.

Yeah, I hope it is Flathub. Flathub+others would be fine, but I really really hope Flathub is a focus because it's just the defaults for Steam Deck and most other Linux distros. I'd rather it not be Snap or .deb...

Those wouldn't be very useful when the target is Steam Deck support.
