Update 07/01/25: The Verge spoke to Valve designer Lawrence Yang who told them "We’re not currently working with GPD on official SteamOS support". So this news from GPD is completely false. I've reached out to GPD to see if they care to explain anything here.
Update #2 07/01/25 - 13:35: GPD replied to my email, giving a rather confusing statement that didn't actually answer my question. I asked clearly "Do you have a statement to share on why this was stated by GPD if it's not happening?" (noting Valve's reply) and this is what they said:
I'd like to tell you that Steam sent us an email after launching Steam Deck, hoping that our device could be pre-installed with SteamOS. We did not agree to pre-install SteamOS, but agreed to provide users with a SteamOS image that matches our device for download on our official website. However, they did not provide us with a technical image or technical support, including power management tools for our device and solutions to bugs encountered by users.
I've pressed GPD again on this, and will update if they reply.
Original article below:
Hardware vendor GPD have updated their store page for the GPD WIN 4 (2025) which notes they plan to support SteamOS on it with help from Valve. The Win 4 is not some brand-new announcement though, it's one they launched originally in 2022 but the 2025 refresh brings newer hardware for it.
It's not entirely clear exactly when GPD updated the page for the GPD WIN 4, but now it does clearly state it will support SteamOS as they talk about going "Beyond The Steam Deck".
From the page:
So far, the WIN 4 is the smallest AMD APU handheld in the world, but its processor is powerful, far surpassing the custom APU of the Steam Deck. The WIN 4 inherits the sliding design and physical buttons of the WIN 3, and it supports Windows 10/11 and SteamOS (with system adaptation provided by Valve).
According to GPD this will be across both the WIN 4 AI 9 HX 370 and WIN 4 8840U models.
Tech specs:
- Screen: 6 inches, 1920 × 1080
- CPU: AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 / AMD Ryzen™ 7 8840U
- GPU: AMD Ryzen™ 890M / AMD Ryzen™ 780M
- DDR: 32GB LPDDR5x 7500 MT/s
- Storage: 1TB / 2TB PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe SSD
- Wireless Network: Wi-Fi 6E, 4G LTE (Optional)
- Bluetooth: 5.3
- USB4: ×1, 40Gbps
- USB Type-C: ×1, 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps
- Oculink (SFF-8612): ×1, 63Gbps
- microSD Slot: ×1, UHS-Ⅰ A2, U3, V30
- Battery: 45.62Wh
It's going to be another machine that's incredibly niche though, when you look at the minimum price according to GPD that will be $851 for the 1TB AMD model. Even though it will "support" SteamOS, it seems it will still only ship with Windows 11 out of the box according to the GPD page.
GPD did say back in 2022 they were looking to cooperate with Valve for SteamOS on their devices.

Aka they're too cheap to invest in making a second model with the mandatory SteamOS Home and QAM buttons.
Update: GPD are wrong on this.
These handheld companies are run by clowns.
