Raspberry Pi 5 has expanded with a new 16GB edition joining the 2GB, 4GB and 8GB models for those who need that extra bit of room. Ready for you to run more intensive applications, games and Linux distributions.

It's available for around $120 / £114.90 depending on where you buy it from.

Talking a little on why they did this model now:

We’re continually surprised by the uses that people find for our hardware. Many of these fit into 8GB (or even 2GB) of SDRAM, but the threefold step up in performance between Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 5 opens up use cases like large language models and computational fluid dynamics, which benefit from having more storage per core. And while Raspberry Pi OS has been tuned to have low base memory requirements, heavyweight distributions like Ubuntu benefit from additional memory capacity for desktop use cases.

The optimised D0 stepping of the Broadcom BCM2712 application processor includes support for memories larger than 8GB. And our friends at Micron were able to offer us a single package containing eight of their 16Gbit LPDDR4X die, making a 16GB product feasible for the first time.

Additionally they've announced the new Carbon Removal Credits system, where you can pay $4 giving you "the option to mitigate the emissions associated with the manufacture and disposal of a modern Raspberry Pi" which they're doing in partnership with UNDO.

More in the announcement.

RPi 5 with 16GB and the module for M.2 is VERY tempting.

Ordered one to put in a Pilet. A Linux tablet with 16gb ram should be useful for many years, unlike all those cheap Android tablets designed to either break quickly or with short software update lives (in your face planned obsolescence!).

Is this actually legit or another one of those 'give us money so you can feel better about yourself' (or the company version 'pay us so you can market yourself as a green company')?

@kerossin Probably that second thing, whether deliberately or not. Carbon credits are generally pretty scammy. Even if the Raspberry Pi people are in good faith, whoever they're buying from probably isn't.

Same amount as my main computer. One of these days I'll have to get an upgrade, but today isn't that day.
