While Steam continues to grow with it repeatedly breaking the concurrent online user counts throughout 2024, we also saw 2024 as the biggest in terms of game releases ever too.

SteamDB posted about it on Bluesky on December 24th, noting nearly 19,000 games had been released. That number was then hit a few days later as games continued to arrive on Steam.

As noted on the SteamDB releases stats page there we actually 19,003 games in total released in 2024. While most years have seen an increase, this was a truly record-breaking year considering just how many extra games were released compared to all the previous years.

The "Limited Games" note is interesting which SteamDB note as:

Limited games have "Profile Features Limited" flag. Steam automatically enables profile customization features as games reach certain player and sales metrics that give confidence that a reasonable number of customers that are engaged with the game.

So during 2024, Steam had 15,009 that were Limited Games showing that while the number of releases is ridiculously high, it seems clear a lot of them are really small releases without much player engagement. When you look at SteamDB's stats, the amount of these Limited Games for 2024 was higher than the total number of games released in 2023.

Not overly surprising since we saw games like Banana that ended up spawning lots of clones. But we also saw an explosion of survivor-likes in 2024 as well, as more developers look to get in on a slice of the pie that Vampire Survivors created and while some of them have been really popular, plenty more have hardly been noticed at all.

I don't know why the Instant Search results of SteamDB are slightly different from their other releases page, but that lists 18,863 games with a release year of 2024, of which 2,143 were Linux native.

The numbers are odd indeed. Filtering on their instant search for both games and apps, actually gives an even higher number for 2024: 19,078.

Also of note is that that's 52 games released per day. Pretty crazy.

And yet there's only 39 so far a few days into 2025, people are slacking around the holidays.
